I'm waiting and hoping to be laid off. Only hoping because it would lighten the full time school/full time work load-Totally ready for a break. I have no idea how I'd survive or what I'd do though.

I work in the home building industry, which is mega scary! No one is building or buying.
tell me about it my bother own a Construction company and he has not bin getting any business. So he might even close it soon, hopefully not.

Buy Y on earth would you want to get laid off, i think its best to try to balance school and work, i hope you re consider, student loan is not the best thing to deal with.
I've been questioning the stability of my job for the past few years but I doubt I'll go anytime soon, unless they let me go. I think they're going to make me go down with the ship. It may be absolutely horrible, but it could be good, too. I'll be forced to do something else.

Sorry for your brother. I know what you mean though. Our customers keep disappearing.
Well hopefully it don't go and they keep you> and thanks
I just have a part time job right now while I finish my last semester at school, but I am having a really hard time finding a career in my industry. I've applied at sooooo many places, and I just haven't gotten any calls yet.
when i graduated i had the same problem, its not a easy phase in your life. But i want to wish you all the best, hope u get some interviews!
I was deeply saddened when I heard the company I work for (telecom giant) was laying off thousands of workers. Then they told us that our division was doing so well that we wouldn't be laying off anyone -- in fact, we're still hiring -- and that made me feel even worse. That means that thousands of salespeople, marketing people, etc, who may not have the skills to get themselves a fancy job like the ones we have (software development) and have probably been with the company for years are going to be laid off, while our division hires on more people (some of them with bloated salaries). :(
i am happy for you
Stimulus packages, although nice in theory, don't boost the economy. People just use the money to pay off their own personal debts instead of going out and spending the stimulus check shopping. And really, spending that money in all the stores is the only way this financial crisis is going to see a glimmer of hope.

But let's be real, that isn't going to happen anytime soon. Many people are swimming in debt and are more concerned with paying that off before picking up some hot pair of must-have $300 leather boots. Therefore, the economy will get worse before it even BEGINS to get better. That’s Economics 101 for you.

Also, keep in mind that Bush sent out stimulus package checks and it didn't work. Obama can try it too, but it won't work either. Like I said, until people stop using that stimulus package check to pay off personal debts and start spending it shopping, the economy will not feel a boost. Money actually needs to be PUT BACK INTO the economy to boost it and paying off personal debts does not accomplish that task.
I agree completely. This is the same reason TARP program with the banks didnt work. Instead of using the money (300 B) to help with bad loans the banks used the money to "pad" their business or to buy other smaller struggling banks. The current stimulus package is just repeating the same mistake Bush made, and will but the country further into debt. Putting money in peoples pockets isnt the same as getting the money working in our economy.

There is no quick fix for this. Everything is cyclical and this will work out in time, capitalism will work if we let it.
Did you guys read the package, as far as I understand, there will be no checks issued to people correct me if am wrong, its going to create jobs and that how the money is going to trickle down into normal peoples pocket. He hope it Create or save 2.5 million jobs by 2011.
“It will be a two-year, nationwide effort to jump-start job creation,” Obama said of the plan. “We’ll put people back to work rebuilding our crumbling roads and bridges, modernizing schools that are failing our children, and building wind farms and solar panels.”
Did you guys know that, the company’s you work for actually more pore tax for you than you pay for yourselves, yes they actually pay 60% and you pay only 40%, so with this plan that he is proposing that will cut business tax, don’t you think that will leave the company with more money to employ a new employees or keep the one they have instead of letting them go.
"We’ll put people back to work rebuilding our crumbling roads and bridges, modernizing schools that are failing our children, and building wind farms and solar panels."

Those jobs are fine for people who lack a college education and want to go the blue collar route, but what about the rest of the country? I’m not trying to demean blue collar workers, but the above describes jobs for road crews and construction workers, which for the most part are union jobs. And don't even get me started on unions! Overpaid union workers are partially to blame for why the American auto industry is virtually non-existent these days. Foreign manufactures don't use unions. So they pay their workers at a fair and competitive rate. However Ford, Chrysler and GM pay their union workers a ridiculous wage for working a fucking electric screwdriver on an assembly line.

From my understanding, the US is the ONLY country that has unions. And while unions may put more money in the pocket of Joe Blow the union worker, unions actually hurt our economy as a whole. They eliminate the very thing that powers American businesses – competition. If you are a union worker, it’s nearly impossible to get fired! To me that’s just ridiculous. If you don’t do your job, your job security should be threatened. Although, if you are in a union, you can sit on your ass if you wish and nobody says anything. That type of work ethic infuriates me to no end! (And it's exactly what I see out my office window this very moment with 5, yes count them 5, workers sitting on their duff while just 2 guys patch the road.)

Ok, sorry. I'm going off in a totally different topic now. But the bottom line is this...

Obama is to represent change, right? Well he can't change the country all on his own. We all have to do our part to produce change. And if you ask me, that starts with our expectations of what we are entitled to. I'm sorry, but when your only skill is running a power screwdriver, you should not be "entitled" to $20+ an hour pay. That's insane!

People need to become a bit more humble. Cut down your living expenses so you can take a lower paying job if need be. Stop bitching about not being able to find a job when your resume lacks any type of education or marketable skill. It's YOUR job to make yourself hirable. You need to move and adjust with the times. Just because you've worked in a steel mill for 25 years doesn't mean it's the ONLY thing you can do. If that line of work is no longer in need, then find another line of work that DOES need people and IS hiring. So do whatever it takes. Enroll in school, learn a new trade, hey whatever it takes. Beggars can't be choosers. Times are tough and people need to toughen up.

And for the love of God, if we can do away with unions and take those same union workers and employ them in the good old fashion way of competitive wages, I think we would see an improvement in American business. Thus improving the American economy. That's just my 2 cents.

(But I exclude teachers from this. Even though they are union, I think teachers here are grossly UNDERPAID and that is something I never understand.)
