I graduated Magna Cum Laude, GPA 3.8 with awards from a top tier school and immediately went to work for a Fortune 200 conglomerate. I worked there for a year and a half and was promoted twice; the final promotion being to a level that usually requires three to five years experience.

I lost that job in mid-december due to corporate lay-offs along with 20% of the company and I am still unemployed.

Today, I interviewed at a restaurant to be a server. This is truly the only option at this time. I have exhausted every outlet and looked in every nook and cranny, talked to every contact, registered with every recruiting agency, etc. It is really sad.

But the good part is that I am learning and growing because of what I am going through. I could have moved home with my parents but I am choosing to stay and fight and do whatever it takes to make it through this until things get better and I can get my career back on track. So what if I need to wait a few tables until a door opens?

And you know what helps? Writing about it in my blog and keeping the humor going. Keeping things in perspective, you know? It's only money and things will get better... we just need to support each other, stay positive, and keep our focus on the future.
I am really sorry to hear that, and i wish that you will get some good news soon,if not hey do what you got to do.

Keep the faith
I think it's times like these when the true geniuses step up and make world changes. Sometimes it's during the toughest times that if you get into the right position, you can really get somewhere when it swings back up...think of all the people that are buying shares in the 'crap' companies right now that'll be cashing in later!

Or in more realistic terms, that store down the street that just went under because they have poor bookkeeping skills is now up for rent. You can now get a great location for uber cheap and set up your business! Primed and ready for when the economy upswings!

As an accountant you have skills that will never go out of style, so I wouldn't worry. :)
That’s is so true, me and a co-worker do consulting on the side and we were planning to start a consulting firm, now that the economy is in turmoil we think it’s the right time, due to the fact that people rather pay (contract) someone to do their books and be over with them, rather than have an employee that they have to pay 60% of their taxes and medical expenses.

You are very optimistic, I like that great way of thinking.
Oh, I'm far from optimistic! But apparently I fake it well enough that I can fool even you! :)

I figure if you talk yourself into positive stuff enough you'll eventually start to believe it.
That's a good way to look at it, well you definitely fooled me lol
My company just announced the other day plans to let go of around 1000 people of it's U.S. businesses. I'm pretty worried, but I hope that it will be OK.

This whole recession thing has really got me down... I blogged about it yesterday because that was when we finally got an internal memo about what was going to be shaking out in the very near future.
well i hope that they don't let you go.
I lost my job about a week ago. To avoid any possible legal issues, I won't name my employer, but they are a cable/internet/telephone conglomerate. They have been doing a lot of firings recently, (about five people that I know of, not including myself) from my office alone (the company has hundreds of offices across the country).

I think they may be trying to avoid paying unemployment because every single person fired recently has been fired for misconduct of some sort, and they're using misconduct reasons because that (usually) means that the ex-employee isn't eligible for unemployment. I'm not positive if this is the case or not, but given the economical situation and the sudden firing of a lot of employees, I wouldn't be surprised if there were ulterior motives for releasing us.

And of course, there's not a single job that I'm capable of doing that's actually hiring right now, either. I feel like I'm pretty much up a creek at this point.
Well I am really sorry that this has happen, however an employer can’t fire you unless he has “just caused” without paying unemployment.

So if your turn up late for work, he can fire you.

If they couch you stealing

Sexual harassment

And the list goes on, however this has to be documented in order for them to fire you, without you being eligible for unemployment. So if you think there is not just cause then you can take it up with the administrative board, and the unemployment agency.

Best of luck.

Thanks for sharing.
