I really like listening to dance music when I workout.
A quick playlist I suggest:
Le Tigre - "TKO" (it's a great song to get really pumped up)
The Ting Tings - "Shut up and Let me go"
BT feat. Rose McGowan - "Superfabulous"
Junior Senior - "Shake Your Coconuts"
Lady Gaga - "Just Dance"
Paul Oakenfold feat. Brittany Murphy - "Faster Kill Pussycat"
This is obviously my "G" rated mix. I also have a more adult dance mix because well, I really enjoy thinking about the deed when I workout - it keeps me motivated.
I also think Rock is great for working out. I really suggest Juliette and the Licks. Their songs "Hot Kiss" and "20 yr old lover" really get me going on the treadmill.
Kanye West's "Workout Plan." For some reason, I love listening to it at the gym.
I prefer fast-paced music, but not necessarily dance music only because I'm apt to make an ass out of myself.
...Funny story: I used to go to the gym at my apartment complex during senior year of college and would work on the treadmill or whatever machine while watching movies. One day, I made the mistake of watching a Dane Cook special, and looked like a damn fool laughing hysterically throughout my workout in front of everyone. Got some strange looks after that every time I walked into the gym.

I usually just listen to songs that I really like (and obviously aren't ballads)...I'm an 80's nut so I usually listen to some tears for fears and I LOVE Prince...David Bowie...the Libertines are a new favorite...
I'm all about the 80's and 90's when I work out....newer hip hop too.
Bubba Sparxx - Miss New Booty
Eve - Tambourine
Destiny's Child - Lose My Breath
En Vogue - Free Your Mind
Britney Spears - Toxic
Crystal Waters - 100% Pure Love
Michael Jackson - Don't Stop til You Get Enough
It's not everyone's thing, but when I work out I almost exclusively listen to power metal. Hammerfall, Sonata Arctica, Dragonforce, Sinergy, Rhapsody, Kamelot, Edguy, etc. It's just so epic, it really keeps me motivated.
Then again, like I said, not everyone's thing. ^_^
How about 3 full albums (mp3 format) that you can download legally and totally free?
They aren't by some unknown band. They're hit songs from today and back in the day as a mash-up/mix from world renowned DJs in clubs through LA, Vegas, etc.
They take older songs from bands like Guns & Roses and mix it with today's Jay-Z...I know that sounds weird and you're thinking it will sound like shit, but surprisingly it doesn't. I've HATED other mash-ups/mixes in the past, but these guys really have it down right.
It's called "Best Of Bootie" and right now they have an album for '05, '06, '07 and I'm sure '08 will be out soon. Check it out and see what you think. I've passed this link on to some female friends of mine in the past and they LOVE it to workout too. It's definitely a little different, but at the same time familiar.
