The Bloggers With The Most To Say

So I'm toying around the idea of buying a permanent URL for my blog, buuuuuut I have no idea how to do that. Go Daddy? Is that the best one out there? Any suggestions?

And if I buy a new URL I truly have no idea how to switch my blog over. Tips? Suggestions? Help? Anyone?

Thanks so much.

You rock. :)

I bought a URL...made an absolute mess of it...ended up paying two different companies for the same service that only one was providing me...reaffirmed my moron status when it comes to accomplishing things without research or a thought-out plan.

It's not so bad though. I went through GoDaddy (I think? So many company names have gotten twisted up in my scenario) and then just used used Domain forwarding to send it to my Blogger site rather than try to build my own blog from scratch. You can even click so that your custom URL covers the blogger URL at all times...not sure if that affects your existing links or not though.

Helpful? Reading back it doesn't look like it. But hey, it's an answer ;)
I use Go Daddy. That is where my original name was bought. I have my two hosted blog domains with the hosting company, but the domains I bought years before. when I was still a live journal dead journaler were bought at Go Daddy. The redirect is fine, and if you get your own hosting you just have to change the nameservers, otherwise you just redirect.

Just don't buy any of the extra stuff.
if you have a blogger blog they make it reaaaallly easy. If you just go to Manage: Settings > Publishing then you can pick your URL, check availability, pay 10 bucks to buy the domain, and blogger still hosts your site so you can edit easily etc. I just switched margottobed.blogspot.com to margottobed.com and nothing changed besides the URL and i'm very happy with it.. hope this helps!
I just did that last week. It was super easy and I wish I did it earlier.
I bought a URL recently and I had Jess of Delicious Design Studio host and move everything over. It was really easy, but I'm still getting used to the difference. Mine is wordpress based.
This question has already been answered above. But I'd throw in my 2 cents. If you do register a domain I personally recommend Godaddy. The other domain registrars (people who register/control website names) have been less than reputable and honest in the past. Godaddy seems to be held to the highest of standards (compared with other domain registrars) as far as the web community goes.

That being said, simplest thing to do is buy a domain (www.yourname.com) and redirect it (302 redirect) to your existing blog. Helps build your personal brand and sounds more professional to have your own website name. This would be the simplest option.

If you want to get into doing your own website (away from the bloggers/livejournals of the world) there is a bit more technical knowledge required. It's like a car, most people care how to drive a car - that's it. Others like to know the inner workings of what goes on under the hood. Hosting your own website is like being a mechanic with a car - you need to know what goes on "underneath the hood" per say, in addition to knowing how to drive it. It's not rocket science, but there is a learning curve if you aren't familiar with any of the "web technologies" or terminology.

Hope this isn't more confusing than helpful! Drop me a line if you need any further assistance!

Good luck!
Justin
I've been using mister.net for years. It is the cheapest you will find, which is why I use it because I have changed domain names as often as I change my socks. Ok, not really but too often. You only have the pay for the domain name, like around $30 per year. That's it. I don't know about it for hosting a blog though because I've only used it to host normal sites, but I may get a domain for my blog, and I'll be using mister.net. :o)
Thanks for all the help guys! I got myself a new URL last night, woo.

One question though, do I need to register a new sitemeter, or will it continue to work with the old URL?

I'm so tech deficient.

Thanks!
I didn't have to switch mine over, so you should be okay.
