I've had several really bad experiences with trolls. (people totally tearing me apart on my blog comments) It's stuff beyond "you're a stinky poo head" they're pretty intense comments even with links to a forum with SIXTEEN pages of people tearing apart my words and defaming my reputation. I even started receiving hate mail at my personal and work email accounts. These people searched the web for any way they could reach to me. Has anyone had experience with harrassers?
I disabled my blog comments for a long time out of fear of getting my feelings hurt and I've recently enabled them again only to get more nasty comments. I don't know if it's just one person or what. Is this just part of blogging? Or am just unlucky?
Oh yeah, I've had that. And what triggered it was me having a strong opinion that went against theirs. They went as far as to create a wiki and have a whole page completely tearing up my words, twisting stuff around, and completely defaming me (but they did that with a lot of other people, including other friends of mine). I didn't get hate mail, but I got the comments, (and deleted them) and the wiki was enough to really get me sick to the stomach, literally.
Sometimes it's more than one person. In my case it was at least 5.
Wow. It sounds like you've had the most similar experience as mine. I ended up determining that there were about 6 people involved as well. I too felt literally sick to my stomach. It bothered me for months and I lost my love for blogging for a while. What bothered me the most is thinking about what kind of people they were. Were they creepy anti-social weirdos locked up in their basements just looking for people to harrass out of their own dislike for life? Or were they everyday "normal" people who just really didn't like me and wanted to let me know? I guess it doesn't really matter. In the end it's a test of self-assurance. If we know who we are, screw them.
I thought of it as them being immature creeps who don't have anything better to do. They were ranging from ages 15-19, and I'm like...wait a minute--they're old enough to know better. What the hell?
But then I figure that I'm going to be their target because I'm *ahem* obese (*winces*), so they can have their fun with their words. They're going to be eating crow salad once they piss off the wrong person.
I personally have not had much experience with harassment which surprises me since I work in marketing*. But after taking a look at your URL I think it may have something to do with your platform - that is, not the traditional blog software, but the blog software installed on a larger network site. This means that it is visible to more kinds of readers, as to be expected, but that doesn't explain all the hate. So I do think you may be of the unlucky variety, even though having somewhat of a tough skin is part of having a public presence on the internet.
Also, it occurs to me that you have a YouTube channel, and I believe that there is a special circle of hell reserved for YouTube commenters. So there's the possibility it could be some of those kids.
(by the way, your voice is lovely! very classic presentation and texture, i applaud you because "they just don't sing like that anymore," you know?)
*NOTE: Marketing! Not Advertising! There's a difference! I'm not a spammer I swear!
Thanks a million for the props, and a million more for your insight on the harrassment. You bring up important points. I think the bottomline is, thick skin is definitely required of us who put ourselves out there. It's part of the job! Thanks again!
I used to have in too and at one point it started getting real bad that I wanted to quit blogging entirely because I really couldn't take being hurt like that anymore. It wasn't until later that I realized that trolls are there for their own sick pleasure and my blog is there for my own pleasure. I rather entertain my own pleasure rather than theirs.
What I did was to create a comment policy on my blog, which I'll post the link up under the "Policing the Comment Section" thread. What I also eventually learned is that trolls stay for as long as you entertain them. So I started getting into the habit of either ignoring the or making fun out of trolls either in the comments or as part of my actual blog post.
Here is one post I wrote from an especially long troll comment. Absolutely hilarious. I stopped having trolls for a long time now. You just have to grow out of their league. It'll die away soon enough.
OH my god! I read that troll's post to you and couldn't believe it! I got similar things written to me!!! It's creepy isn't it?! It's like they tear you apart from a deeply psychological level. It made me sick reading it. I'm so sorry that happened to you. I'm glad you stepped up and kept going regardless of the harrassment. What the F*#$ is wrong with trolls? I really wish I could understand. Are they crazy people? I don't get it...
At that point in time, I got a little wiser and more confidant in terms of dealing with trolls, hence the post. The truth is, when you blog, you have to keep reminding yourself that it's all about you. Rather, you're the self-appointed dictator of your own blog.
It's times like that where you get to be a little selfish and a little arrogant. There are better things in life than the people who just want to make your world miserable. Don't play into that. Their the ones compensating for the lack of many things anyway. Why else would they be trolling around?
I haven't had serious problems with this, but I've had a lurker or two that have been unusually cruel in their comments. Personally, I think I know one of them, a friend being a jerk, but I don't know. I'm tempted to disable anonymous comments but it hasn't been consistent enough that I think it's seriously necessary. It's scary to think though that someone would be that kind of mean.
Right???? That's been my biggest issue is trying to conceive how someone could be such a jerk. How someone could get pleasure out of being so downright cruel. Thanks for your response, I'm glad to know you empathize!
I've never had that experience just yet, but I'm only 3-4 months in with 200 average visitors a day. I'm sorry you've gotten such harassment though no one deserve that kind of treatment. What blogging system are you on?
I blog for an online newspaper. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer. I believe it's their own integrated system.... Thanks for the sympathetic response! I wish you the best in your blogging pursuits! :)
