The Bloggers With The Most To Say

I am working on becoming a teacher for young children and wanted to start a nice collection of books for children. If you have any favorites please share so I can maybe add it to my collection. Thanks for your help.

This was the first :)

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

my husband's mom is a teacher & she used to keep this book in her classroom. If a kid was having an exceptionally bad day, they had the option of keeping the book at their desk for the day & it meant that they did not have to answer any questions or participate for that day. it also meant that no-one could(or would) talk to them for that day basically giving them a day "off". i thought that was a cute idea!

You are Special By Max Lucado is a fantastic book to help children know that they are unique and valued no matter who they are or what their circumstances.

The Velveteen Rabbit.
This is right up my alley. My mom is a preschool teacher and I've inherited her love (obsession?) with children's books.

Anything by Eric Carle (Very Hungry Caterpillar)
Anything by Mo Willems (Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus)
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff
The Mitten by Jan Brett
Diary of a Worm by Doreen Cronin
Rumpelstiltskin's Daughter by Diane Stanley
Stellaluna by Janell Cannon
Madeline books by Ludwig Bemelman

Whatever you do, don't buy Bernstein Bears. I analyzed them for a gender construction project and they needed no deep analysis. They are already sexist and racist on the surface. Personally, Mo Willems is the best children's book author I've read.
I still own several of my old Eric Carle books. Love them.
Great idea! My list is my own personal favorite books plus books that I've noticed the kids I teach really love:
- anything by Robert Munsch (especially "Mortimer" or "The paper bag princess")
- anything by Dr. Seuss (the rhyming makes it easier for the younger kids who can't read to get the 'rhythm' of the story which they enjoy)
- Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes (actually, I like anything by him but this is my favorite)
- Flat Stanley b y Jeff Brown. (It's a chapter book, so I read it to the class, but there's a great online site that goes with it and you can have the kids make their own flat stanleys and send them to people, it's a great class activity and the book has vocab that children in grade 2 can understand the story)
-Greg Tang has great books for kids that all relate to math. My class loved them so much they would read them in their free time.
-I ditto Libby with the Alexander books. The one she mentioned is my favorite but coming in a close second is "Alexander who used to be rich last Sunday".

Also, there's so many good chapter books to have to read to the class. I read "James and the Giant Peach" this year and they loved it. Charlotte's Web would also be awesome too.
ooohhh - i love Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse!

also, i thought of another one....Where the Wild Things Are.
I created a group for love of children's books if any of you would like to join. Ty for all your responses also. Take Care =)
My favorites as a child were the Richard Scary books.
I'm pretty sure my absolute favorite children's book is Dr. Seuss's ABCs.

I still get enjoyment out of reading that book. Is that weird?
