I am pretty new to this blogging thing, and I must say that I am feeling a touch overwhelmed by all of the social networking sites. I have had Facebook for ages and have to stay on to keep in touch with old friends, I am trying to figure out the benefits of Twitter, and I am really liking this ning network, but some of the others are just confusing.
I can't figure out if they are really worth my time. Do you have any input on Cre8Buzz, Entrecard, LinkedIn or any of the others? Which have been the most helpful for you in terms of finding awesome bloggers as well as getting your own blog out there?
I'm not familiar with the other sites you mentioned but Twitter and LinkedIn have consistently brought traffic to my blog and has helped me build new relationships with other bloggers and marketing professionals.
I'm attending BlogHer and just live-blogged about social networking and content syndication/promotion. Check it out and see if any of it helps you: Live Blogging....
I don't have opinions on many of the social networking sites out there, but I do believe that Twitter is one of the best ones you could choose. Many of the women at BlogHer said their greatest amount of traffic comes from conversations on Twitter. If you use the tool to your greatest advantage, you'll be surprised with the results.
Also, test out a couple of tools. Give yourself a one month limit and if you don't like them, move on to another one. Thats the best way to figure out if it's going to work for you. Our opinions will help, but we're all looking for something different so just because we like it doesn't mean you will.
I think limiting yourself to a couple at first and spend most of your time on content and establishing relationships with readers.
I can't tell you how many social networks I've joined never to return, though I am on linked in and twitter as well as others I don't use any of them that often. It is rather overwhelming.
I agree with the others in saying that LinkedIn and Twitter are my go-to's for Professional networking. I use the standard sites like Facebook and MySpace because my friends are on there. Honestly I think we'll see a bunch of sites come and go but I think (and hope) that LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook will survive.
As far as which social media sites are the most helpful... first, you have to establish what you need help with.
Social bookmarking sites like Digg, Del.icio.us, and Stumbleupon are good for generating buzz about your blogs posts and content.
Social networking sites like Facebook, Myspace and Ning are good for exchanging thoughts and ideas with like minded individuals.
Micro-Blogging services like Twitter and Plurk are great for keeping up to date on current events, trends and what your friends are up to.
Business networking sites like Plaxo, Gooruze and LinkedIn are great for keeping in contact with old clients and using your network to find new business connections. They're also good for showing off your experience within your field, like your resume 2.0.
And finally, Entrecard is more of a service to help promote your blog. I'm very picky about who I let advertise on my blog and I choose carefully where I advertise mine. Once you get used to the system of entrecard credits its not hard at all. The cool thing about it is its all free and you get credits by visiting other blogs. The problem is people only visit your blog to get the credits, not to read.
