I dunno - I know no one reads my trainwreck of a blog....but I keep writing hoping maybe it'll stick or someone will notice it. I like doing it, it keeps me sane.
On my personal blog: jd.jonbishop.org, its just the chance to vent
On my tech blog: jonbishop.org, it's the one or two emails i get each month thanking me for a review i did or a breakdown of a website. I'm easily satisfied so that's all i need to keep going.

I think for me it's the idea that one day I'll post the ultimate post, the one that will get everyone who reads it laughing or thinking about what I've said. I've read so many other blogs which can do these things for me, and I would love the idea that other people felt that way reading mine.
Also, in a lot of ways it's my version of therapy. I feel a lot better sometimes having, like Jon says in his comment, the chance to vent. Also, if I have a problem I can get an unbiased opinion from people who don't really know me.
I think you need to keep yourself going. And if you can't find the time, energy or will to keep going, then perhaps it's time to quit. I think writing is a passion and it's either in you or it isn't.
The day I start blogging for other people or need them to keep me motivated, is the day I stop. I think you need to write for yourself - have that passion in you.
Sure, I enjoy people reading what I write. But for the most part, I write for me. It's one of my passions in life.

I am fascinating with documenting things are they are, and there is no better way (in my mind, at least) than writing about the strange, fascinating and amusing things that I encounter.
More than anything, I want to be able to look back at my blog and remember certain times or quotes or moments I might have forgotten about.
If you enjoy doing it, don't get caught up in the numbers and comments. Just relax and do it for you. The rest will come.
If you're really asking how to increase readership, then the best way is to read/comment on other blogs, request guest posts, participate in blog carnivals and swaps, etc. No matter how great your writing is, you have to make sure people can find it.
As others have already said, I don't really think about readership or numbers or any of that. As I live life, things occur to me that I really want to jot down and explore, and as I work with nothing but idiots and the few people that I know that are intelligent are elsewhere entirely, I express myself to my blog.
I keep writing my blog because it is somewhere I can put my thoughts and add things that interest me. Thinking about posts for my blog helps me get through a quiet boring time at work and it makes me look busy when I'm not. Its kinda got addictive as I now have three blogs for the different sides of me.
For me it's passion. I love writing, I love blogging and connecting with others through my site. If you're into what you're writing, others will come to it.
I think that once you get over the hump of writing in hopes that 'someone will notice it' and write for yourself- it gets a lot easier. I find that shutting off comments sometimes helps me make sure that I'm writing because I WANT to, not because I'm begging for readers (which I used to do in subtle and not so subtle ways). I know it sounds cliche, but like so many before me said (and in many cases these are the people who DO have the big readerships) don't write for other people. But if you are wanting comments- you have to comment.
It became a habit really, something I enjoy. It's addictive, much like I imagine a cigarette is to those who smoke, a way to relax at the end of the day.
