No, I haven't read the series, and that's the purpose of this discussion. Obviously, the Twilight series is marketed more toward teenagers/young adults - then again, Harry Potter wasn't aimed toward an adult market and somehow managed to gain a wide following.
Is the Twilight series a good read? Or am I going to stumble over poor writing - that's a criticism I have heard - and far-fetched content? Clearly, vampires aren't the most realistic subject matter, but from an adult perspective, I'd love to know what my fellow 20sb folks think about the series.
My sister (age 21) LOVES them and I finally gave in to discover what all the hype was about. I enjoyed the first one a lot, although I haven't gotten to read the rest yet. It is a fun read, and you definitely will get pulled in to the story. It won't be the most masterful piece of fiction you'll ever read, but I think you will like it. At least read the first one to give you an idea of what all the fuss is about. :)
I had an issue with the writing when I first started reading Twilight and for the first several chapters all I could think about was how whiny Bella was and how bad the writing was. Just when I thought I couldn't take it anymore though, I got sucked into the story line and the next thing I knew I was done with the whole series. Now I'm getting ready to read it for the second time. I definitely think that it's worth the read.
But don't be surprised if suddenly you are disappointed by the fact that the man in your life doesn't sparkle in the sun. I'm currently on it with my boyfriend but for some reason he doesn't seem too keen about being dipped in glitter. I don't know why ...
I haven't read it either...but what I hear is that it's much more of a 'young adults' series than Harry Potter, which really appeals to a much wider audience.
That being said, I would pay $9.50 to stare at Robert Pattinson for an hour and a half.
I read the four books of the series in four days...that should tell you something :). I couldn't put them down! I have to say the only criticism is things got a little fantastical (like you said vampires aren't so realistic). I have to say I think the first book was my favorite but it's worth it to read them all and find out what happens.
I'm 22 but I don't consider myself to be an adult. So my opinion of this may be completely skewed and biased.
The truth of the matter is that I adore Twilight. No, the writing is not top quality and you're not dealing with your typical vampires. However, if you read Twilight, you must read it with an open mind to accept Stephenie Meyers' version of the supernatural. Reading it solely as a love story, though, is what makes Twilight so amazing. It's not about the fact that the writing is somewhat poor or that the vampire sparkle. Rather, it really is about the actual story line.
I LOVE the Twilight series. The writing is far from perfect, but it's a great story and lots of fun. They're great summer reads, so you might as well check it out!
I've written a lot about my love for Twilight over the last year. Yeah, the writing isn't the best, but Stephenie did something right if should could put cynical me under Edward's spell. Plus, writing fiction is really hard and I have enormous respect for anyone who can put together a coherent story, let alone one that has engaged so many people.
