Being on here is a good start! :0)

Hmmm, as for other tips:

* Don't be shy - get involved. Visit other people's blogs and comment if you find anything interesting in them. It's about communication, and creating relationships.

* Be sincere with your blog - don't fake it. Don't be somone you're not.

* Have fun with blogging - if you're having fun, then people should warm to you.

I'm relatively new to the blogging world myself, so I'm sure other people will have more tips for you! Good luck with your blog, and welcome to the blogging world! :0)
I think Elle was spot on with what she said - you find that the more blogs you read the more people will come by and read yours. But it's important not to read other blogs just to get an audience of your own, I think people can pick up when bloggers are doing that. There are so many interesting blogs on here though, sometimes I wish I had all the time in the world to read them! Perhaps when I win the lottery . . .

Oh and another good idea is to add a counter to your blog to see what is driving traffic there and where they are coming from. Both statcounter and google analytics are good bets for this, if you haven't added these already.
Elle has already hit on a lot of good points. For me, the best way to get readers is to be a reader. Go out and comment (sincerely) on blogs you enjoy. Connect with people here and around the internet. Getting readers is a lot about getting to know your audience.
Elle nailed it, so I'm just going to expand on some other things you COULD do (not should and ill explain why after).

Getting listed in some popular directories and communities sometimes helps. You can try http://www.blogcatalog.com/ and http://www.mybloglog.com to get you started.

There is also a site called http://entrecard.com/ that basically allows for free advertising on other peoples blogs that use it. There is a little more to it than that but its easy to figure out.

You could also partake in a blog swap. They happen every once and awhile around here so just keep an eye out.

Now the reason I said could and not should is because some of the sites like blogcatelog and entrecard can become access baggage on your site, meaning it might not help at all and could possibly even slow down the load time of your site. I personally stopped using entrecard to increase my load times a little but I do still use mybloglog and blogcatelog.
Just have fun. I find the time promoting blogs on social sites is worthless unless your intent is to have a blogs with ads and you just want clicks. To get readers who stick around you just need to develop your own
comfort zone, find blogs you like to read and read them and comment and eventually you will have readers.

Enjoy it.
Don't feel pressured to blog every day. Only blog when the mood strikes, otherwise your content may seem forced. And definitely visit other people's blogs, and comment! Being on here is awesome, but I find that commenting on other blogs is the best way to get readers, and more importantly, make awesome friends. (Sounds corny! But its true!)

And welcome to the blog world!
I think the most important thing to keep in mind about blogging, and the easiest thing to lose sight of, is that you just do it for you. If you do it for the hits or you try to adopt a style that really isn't you, people will see through it and you'll quickly lose all of the enjoyment you once found in blogging. It really isn't about the hits, it's about sharing a part of yourself and connecting with an amazing group of fellow bloggers!!

Good luck to you, and I hope you enjoy blogging as much as I have for the past three years :)
