I have only just started out on blogging but have been reading and checking out blogs for a fairly long time. The thing I noticed was that almost all the bloggers have found a particular topic of interest and are coming up with good stuff regularly. They are also getting a good number of hits from people sharing the similar area of interest.
However, when I decide to start off blogging, I didn't want to restrict myself to single focal point. I started blogging with a few broad areas in mind and have managed to keep it going for the time being.
I would like to know if 'not' having a topical blog (blog dedicated to a single topic) is the wrong way to go about it.
I don't have a topical blog, I tend to post about different things :) Unless you're very good at talking about a particular subject and can come up with something often enough to keep people interested then that's fine. I tend to stay away from topical blogs because I like some variety, and you tend to lose out on a large number of readers who don't relate. The only topical blogs I read are design blogs, and weight loss blogs but these tend to be blogs written by people whose personal blogs I already follow.
I think having a topical blog works best if you're planning on selling ads and eventually monetizing. I've set up two blogs myself, one for travel and one for personal. It really helps bring in more readers with SEO and stuff, but if you're doing it for your own personal gain, then hey, write whatever the hell you want.
