Anonymous Blogging?

I haven't gone out of my way to invite "real life" people to read my blog, but for awhile it was posted to my Facebook, and now it's linked from my Twitter, which some real life people read.

My family doesn't read it, though, and I'd really prefer to keep it that way for now, but I also wouldn't have a huge problem if they stumbled upon it. I write everything assuming they could find it somehow, so it wouldn't be the end of the world.

Not anonymous at all! I've been writing online for years, and my blog is an extension of a lot of stuff I do in real life. The two are very inter-mixed. I don't think I could handle writing an anonymous blog, because I love meeting people IRL and I wouldn't want to hide anything or have them call me by a fake name.

My family reads my blog, some friends do.... my boyfriend and his mom read my blog! So I try to stay of safe topics. I write about what I do, what I'm thinking about. Favorite things, sometimes things that I annoy me. I write about my chronic illness some, but I also write about traveling and anything else that I'm thinking about. I don't write about arguments or things that would reflect poorly on someone else, but if I'm feeling blue or upset about something in general, then I'll write about that. I also don't write about work, unless it's very neutral. I don't want to get dooced!

Sometimes I wish I were anonymous, because then I could write about relationships or other things, but again, I think I would have trouble keeping things separate, or I'd want to refer to something a blogger friend said and then I'd be SOL! Sigh. I guess it's a give and take.

Yeah.... I'm don't fret too much about hurting peoples' feelings. Mostly, I just don't want to get fired.

i have told my friends that i blog, if they ask for the link ill give it to them, but i dont go boasting it. I dont care if my friends read it, i am not really talking shit about anyone on there lol so i guess it doesnt really matter... i guess i dont want my coworkers to read it bc i usually blog during work !

i told my family, not my friends. i refuse to talk about my family on my blog. atleast, harshly. if i'm mad at them, i just vent to my husband. no need to publish it for hundreds or more people to read(i'm flattering myself, haha).

Family, no. Mostly because I like to talk a bit about sex, drinking and relationships. I keep it open to all my friends and Internet readers though. I tried to keep it more "anonymous" when I first started out, but that generally doesn't work AT ALL. People find it eventually.

I am in no way anonymous, and my friends and family do read my blog. I wrote a scathing post about a person I don't like and she found it (read the comments on here). I think blogging anonymously will always lead to problems. I'll quote Penelope Trunk on this when she says:

"Blogging anonymously is bad for a lot of reasons, but especially because it is a way to not be careful. If you are anonymous, you will not follow any of these rules. Because blogging is work, and following these rules is more work. But you eventually will be found out. It’s how the world works. I mean, if your blog is at all successful, you’ll be found out, and if your blog sucks, why are you doing it anyway? If you are not anonymous, you will always be careful." (full post here)

It sounds a little hypocritical as she wrote her thesis with a pen name...(?)

I can't say I agree with her advice at all. Just because no one is reading, it doesn't mean your blog is a failure. People blog for lots of reasons, and not everyone is out to make money.

However I did love your post on the crazy chick. LOL.

Actually, the pen name was given to her by a publishing company (or something) that she worked for. She then legally changed her name to that pen name.

I have only told a few people that I know in real life about my blog. Mostly I just keep it to myself because I don't want any hurt feelings either. I don't rant that much but when I do, I want to be able to write about any thing that I want.

I was surprised and a little bit horrified when I found out people I knew read my blog.

I live in a small city (1.5 million people) and a reader/commenter had an unusual name.. a name I'd heard a friend mention as one of her best friends. Turns out she was one and the same.

My sister also recognised my writing - she reads a lot of blogs in my niche (food).

My husband was the only person I knew who I showed the blog to at first. But then later I told a few people what I was doing.

I don't really write about people, but sometimes my thoughts are a little random and crazy but then I'm like that in "real life" too.

Well, this is an interesting topic as it's a coversation that I had recently with my boyfriend.

I had a blog that I kept for years but wasn't anonymous and family and friends were able to read it. I often felt the need though to censor or completely omit things as I was worried about people's reactions and to me that wasn't blogging. At a time that I really needed to blog about two years ago I couldn't, plain and simple. I started my new blog in January and decided this one was going to be anonymous. This way I can blog everything I want and feel no need for self censorship.
