Anybody been to Cuba?? Travel advice, experiences, thoughts welcome...

I will be going to Cuba in 2 weeks, and am beyond excited to explore Viejo Habana, check out the beautiful archetecture of Trinidad, and visit the area around Vinales. Does that sounds like a managable 10 day itinerary? I'll probably rent a car, although I'm a little nervous about driving there, so we can explore the less traveled route. We definitely don't want the resort areas--we want to get a feel for the culture and the people.

Any suggestions, places not to be missed, etc? Also, how did you handle currency when you went?

Muchos gracias!

Yes! Although I went when I was 16 years old...my sister was married to a Cuban man and he still lived there at the time, which was nice because we had a local with us at all times. Don't remember how currency was handled, I seem to remember just using US dollars? Anyway, that was such an amazing trip...obviously go to the beach, but also in the center of Havana there is this park where everyone just hangs out that is awesome...I'm sure you will have no problem finding places to check out.

The main thing that stood out to me, at 16, about Cuba was how amazing the people were. It just really impressed me how generous and positive and beautiful everyone was, especially considering the conditions they lived in. I really urge you to get to know as many locals as you can...it's such an awesome culture. And go to the discotecas and salsa!!! So fun. I'm jealous! Have a great time.
I've heard the best things about the people as well- we will probably stay in casa particulares so hopefully I will get to many nay Cubans: )
Right, that's what I thought..but it gets confusing whe you start reading about different exchange rates, ffrom different currencies, into different currencies, with more or less fees, etc AND you can't use a card remotely attached to an American bank...sigh

I am brushing up my Spanish as we speak!!
Yes, it is. Don't be nervous about driving there. Once outside Havana the roads are virtually empty. Try to avoid driving at night, though. I was coming back from a trip to Pinar del Rio when I spotted a little red light some distance to the front. I thought it must be a cyclist but as I got close I saw it was a huge lorry, barely visible in the dark. As far as currency is concerned ignore the guys who attempt to pass off pesos on the street. It's a currency you will never use. Oh, be careful in Havana. There are lots of con artists and frustrated romeos. :-))
Frustrated romeos! My boyfriend will love that! :P

Great--I'm glad to hear you thought the driving was normal. I think it would be a great way to explore.
