The Bloggers With The Most To Say

I would LOVE to hear from others in the same boat. I am going 1 year now out of work in NYC. It's been a struggle at times but I'm determined to make it! I blog about it every day at TudorCityGirl blogspot. I am hoping to hear from others out there! Thanks!

holy crap. 1 year?! I got laid off about 4 weeks ago. No bueno.
One year out of work and you are still living in NYC? How is that even possible with the cost of living there? I would think you couldn't be jobless for just one month and survive in NYC, without being homeless that is.

And I mean no disrespect and I'm not trying to knock you, I'm just really curious how you're staying afloat! Seriously. Do share your secret!

I’ve never had to file for unemployment, but I have to believe it can’t pay that well, or last that long. No?
I aint laid off yet but verry close i guess as my frens left n right are getting laid off .
Theres no telling when I wil b one more to go for cost cutting!

worst part is all i can do twiddle my thumbs as its impossible looking for a new job BEFORE I get d boot
:(
I'm approaching my second month of unemployment....and it is not fun! The worst part of all is that I just relocated to California, and am now facing having to go back home--- the last thing I want to do!!!

It's definitely taking its toll-- financially and emotionally. But I just keep reminding myself that there are others in the same boat, and its not such much that we are not qualified for work, but that this market is in shambles.

Anyone in the same predicament that have any coping mechanisms? ways to stave off boredom?
I've been out of work for about 18 months. I left grad school at a bad time... but I had some other issues to resolve so I've really only spent about 6 of those 18 months looking for a job. We've been living off of my wife's two incomes, balancing medical bills, etc.

Recently I found a job via Craigslist which I start on Monday. Careerbuilder and Monster just sucked. They were all jobs through staffing agencies who were totally swamped with applications. I applied to over 100 jobs between 2 staffing agencies and never got so much as a call back from them. I got lucky with the job from Craigslist as it relies on a very specific set of skills that I coincidentally happen to have. I'll be overqualified and underpaid, but at this point, I'm not complaining - it's an income that is much needed.

Being jobless is hard though. Takes it's toll. I'm scared shitless of going back to full-time.
Thanks to everyone for the great feedback!

To all the newly unemployed - know you WILL be fine. If I have made it 11 months in NYC out work, anyone can.
I think it is hardest for those with a family. I'm single, have cut back big time and very grateful my unemployment benefits were extended because the jobless rate is so high here. I will post on my blog this month (when I hit the 1 year anniversary of getting canned!) exactly how I survive in NYC still.

Amanda- can you find any part-time work to keep you in Cali until you find a new job? Maybe even babysitting.. in NYC they are paying 15/hour. Yes- many in the same boat and it is not us or our qualifications...it is that the market is STILL terrible. In the fall it should get better.
Boredom is a huge problem for me... I work out or blog!

Oats- Congrats on the job! I will check out CraigsList. Totally agree with you about Monster and HotJobs. You'll only be overqualified and underpaid a short while...once the market improves you will find something much better. This is great for now!
Ugh. I was hoping that this job I had phone interview w/ would pan out... I'm still unsure.

There is a job that I have a REALLY good chance at getting but it's about an hour commute each way :( This sucks. I have an older car... not sure if she'd make it very long doing that every day for a long time
I just got laid off April 30. This is making me so nervous reading about people out of work for over a year! I haven't been able to file for unemployment yet because I got 2 weeks severance, but I can't imagine being able to live on measly unemployment checks for long. I was hoping I would bounce back in a month or two or better yet to get a job before my severance pay was up. I've applied to every marketing job in my area that I could find on the internet last week. So far no replies :(
Cee- I am sure you will get the job you are meant to have..so keep the faith and good luck.

Suz- don't worry-- if I have made it exactly 50 weeks living on unemployment checks in NYC, anyone can. I never thought I would make it here a year. I am sorry you are nervous but keep the faith it will all work out soon. The good news is you were laid off at the end of this downturn...things are getting better. A lot of us lost our jobs early on in the meltdown.
I will add lots of unemployed tips on my blog if you'd like to read, sometimes they can help out.
Good luck!

Wow- that is a long time to wait for a new job but I am SO glad you found a job you love and in govt..that is great! I am looking in govt. now. There seems to be nothing in corporate and was never happy there anyway! I'm glad it all worked out for you.. You have given me hope!
I got an interview! I got an interview!

Now all I need is a job offer!
Yay! Congrats Cee!!!
