The Bloggers With The Most To Say

Here's the deal: I'm in the market for a new computer because:

1.) I want to give my current machine to my younger sister (I'm a good big brother, I know).
2.) I have a little bit of sense as to how to store files without wasting space, and have a decent idea of how I'd run my machine if I were to start from scratch.
3.) I want something that runs better by today's standards.

I currently have a Dell desktop. I've been leaning toward getting a laptop, and I've also been leaning toward Macs. I have some time to think about my purchase (I probably wouldn't be buying said Futurebox until after the 20SB meetup this June).

I want your input--PC or Mac? Desktop or laptop? What kind of machine do you have? What do you use it for, mainly?

Any help from the 20SB community is greatly appreciated. As bloggers, we need computers--what works for you?

I've checked out the specs on the Macbooks and watched the new video. They're stunning to be sure. I just want to make sure I'm happy.

Thanks for the help!
Ok, laptop for sure; they make life so easy.
Next, if you store a lot of pictures on your computer or download stuff make sure to get lots of memory, or even an external hard-drive, otherwise your machine will start to run super slow.

The PC or Mac part depends on what you'll be doing with it. Macs have a more stable operating system and are not as prone to viruses and crashing as much as pc's. (macs do get viruses, but they're not as susceptible as pc's)

I used to be ALL about pc's in college - you couldn't even dream of changing my gateway laptop with a mac. But that was then, and this is now. I couldn't imagine going back to a pc. It's takes a little time to get used to the differences (single button mouse and not two so must push control to access different actions) but after a while, you notice a real difference in performance and how easy it really is - it's almost so easy that it's hard, if that makes any sense to you.
I'm PC. Mostly because Justin Long drives me crazy.

Just kidding internet, just kidding.
I'm a pc. Either one would do whatever I need to do, but a pc typically has the better price point.
I have a Dell. While in college, as a journalism major - and post grad, while working as a reporter - I used a Mac and really liked it.

However, now that I'm not doing much design, I prefer PC. Especially seeing all the trouble the Mac's are causing at school.

But, if I were to get a laptop, which I've contemplated for a few years now, I'd love a MacBook.
I have a Macbook. I love laptops because they're portable. I love macs because they're easy to operate and visually engaging.

So, yes, hello, I'm a mac.
Having used PCs my whole life, switching to a MAC was exciting because the laptop was so gorgeous..portable and gorgeous!

But to be techy, I'd say I prefer MACs because:
- I always lose my data on PCs due to some error or virus...or bug, MACs arent a 100% safe but they are WAY safer, and with Symantec antivirus, it's the most reliabe protection you can get;
- The MAC OSX interface is just so aesthetic and once you get the hang, way more user friendly, not to mention the neat little things you can do with Expose
- If you're a pictures, music and videos person, MAC has better software, easier, more user friendly.
- Going through your MAC HD is simpler and not as complicated as going through your different drives on a PC. You tend to lose some folders sometimes on a PC!
- PC Hard drive allocation is done in a way that eventually slows the computer done, MAC hard drive allocation is done in the most ingenius of ways...and does not slow the computter down as PCs get when you've actively used it over a period of time. (I wish I could explain with diagrams!)
- Torrenting on MAC is obviously safer due to less MAC bugs out there.
- Somehow MAC widgets, the whole OSX interface is so much more fun and cool to look at!

And hey, for those of us who like some features only on PC, we can always use Parallels, I do! I just don't use too much of the internet on it becuase I'm REALLY scared of viruses. I HATE THEM. I have lost my data too many times to count.

And now alot of PC programs are available for Mac, so the transition is easy.
Well, I own a Compaq Desktop and a Dell laptop.

Windows/PC anyday 'cos I am a gamer. ;) And well, PC does have good open-source warez that don't drink much of your RAM! I have worked on the Macs too, but as I said, PC is the best anyday - for gaming.

Otherwise, I guess a Macbook should do you good for a professional life. (Considering the fact that Vista sux! I am still running an XP). If you have enough patience, wait for Windows7. The beta version is damn good, for starters...

Good luck!

Peace.
I have both Mac & PC.

I'm head over heels with Mac (I'm using the old iBook G4), because the graphic is excellent, very user friendly, it runs fast and I don't have to worry about viruses or spyware etc. Only that there are limited games that I can play using Mac and the messengers for Mac are not up to date LOL . (that's the only downside that I can think with Mac LOL) I've been using the G4 for years and I am very satisfied with it. Am planning to buy another Mac myself (waiting for money to fall from the sky LOL)

I am also using HP tablet 2710p, which is lighter than my G4, and that's especially handy when I travel. I love the tablet but windows runs slow.

I always prefer laptops because it's more flexible LOL. (and tablet is very very very flexible) LOL. and my pictures look better in Mac LOL. and Mac is a neat-freak honest! It arranges all the files in folders that you don't have to worry about your files scattered around. You don't have to "defragment" the volume with Mac for faster performance.

Cherios!
For the messenger issue, have you tried Adium? It's kind of like Trillian on PC, an all-inclusive one that lets you sign in with aim, yahoo, gchat, icq, etc, etc, etc all at the same time and talk to your buddies all at once through one program... It's kept pretty well up-to-date too. I think your operating system will support it, but I can't remember what the G4s run?
Yeah, G4 supports adium. Am using adium :) yeah, it's pretty handy that only one program is needed to run all the messengers LOL and the duck is so cute =D
I use Macs pretty much exclusively. My dad made sure that there were only Windows machines in the house until I went to college and demanded a Mac for video editing (even though I've never done any :B). That's when I got my PowerBook G4. I had that for about two years and then got a MacBook Pro and gave the PowerBook to my ex (who wasn't my ex at the time). Theeen about two years later, this past October, I decided to downgrade a little and got one of the black MacBooks instead, and gave the MacBook Pro to my current boyfriend, since he had a really old desktop G4 and could use an upgrade.
And at work I use a MacBook Pro, hopefully exchanging it in for a new one in the next couple weeks. Oh, and they're giving me an iPhone to develop on pretty soon (but I have a Helio Ocean as my personal phone, because I couldn't resist their deals).

Most of our development team uses Macs, because they're less likely to crash, don't really get viruses and can run all of the development software and programs and things that we use (svn and git especially) without a lot of hassle to get them on there. Our design team uses Macs as well (mostly iMacs) because they're pretty powerful and have pretty nifty graphics cards.
I've also heard from our developers that Macs don't do a lot of stupid things with file conversions... but I don't remember what this was in reference to (they're a LOT geekier than me, so I tend to tune them out sometimes).

I use it because it's very user friendly, but still not very difficult to manipulate however you need to, and I've never had to reformat any of my machines for any reason -- especially this "it won't start up anymore!" I keep hearing from Windows/PC people...
