The Bloggers With The Most To Say

Just curious, who do you know who has autism?

I have Asperger's Syndrome myself, do a lot of stuff online with autism, and recently started being the assistant teacher in the special needs class in church.

I'm working right now as the librarian for the Dept. of Special Education. But I used to be a skills trainer for students with special needs (age 5-13). Two of my clients had autism (Aspergers and low-functioning autism).
Okay, I am officially envious of your job. (my dream job is a librarian, believe it or not) :)
Hooray! I believe it. What's stopping you?
Eh...who in their right mind would give me money for college? I passed high school math because the teacher felt sorry for me for taking the 10th grade math class twice and still doing poorly. I did take advanced classes otherwise, but I got only so-so grades. I'm not that bright.
Schools, even colleges, are required by law to provide accomodations. You CAN go to college. Theres lots of grants and programs out there. My sister is dyslexic and while she's struggled with high school, and she fully intends to go to college
You can definitely go to college. Anyone can. My school has a program where they work hard to provide places for everyone to learn in a way that is beneficial to them. Many professors are very willing to help everyone do the best they can. You should try to go to school, I'm sure you could get all kinds of scholarships.
I work with kids with autism, as a one on one community support worker.
My cousin has Asperger's. His Dad refused to let anyone tell him he had it until last year...he's 27 now. I don't think a meaner thing has been done in my family ever.
Also, I had a friend in primary school who had Aspergers.
I volunteer in an autism support classroom, and it has been one of the most rewarding - and difficult - things I've done. There is just something extra special about those kids that really touches me! :)

If you don't mind me asking, when wer eyou diagnosed? I've recently become interested in Autism spectrum disorders in females vs. males... it seems as though they are manifested differently in women? I often feel as though I have Asperger's myself...
I don't mind at all. I was diagnosed at age 14. I should have been diagnosed as a kid but my mom (now passed on) feared the stigma of autism at the time, so refused to take me back to anybody who merely suggested I might be autistic. (I had no social skills, memorized tons of things, preferred reading the encyclopedia to playing with other children, had sensory issues, and loved to spin/line up objects; so it was kinda clear to a trained professional)

After she passed, I was diagnosed with ADHD and then when my dad remarried my stepmom, she could see I was not ADHD and took me to a different doctor. The doctor specialized in Asperger's/Autism and diagnosed me. (my stepmom was a psych nurse, so she knows her psychology pretty well)

I do think a lot of females are overlooked. I recently joined the Autism Women's Network, which is a neat site for those on the Autism Spectrum who are female.
I teach a lot of pupils on the ASD spectrum. The big issue we have is the government closed all of the special schools and put those with ASD in mainstream education. It can be very challenging dealing with ASD pupils and those who are not in the same room.

I have to say though ASD pupils, whilst challenging, can be hugely rewarding to work with - I just have to change how I think of things to try and get into their mindset and then approach a lesson from that direction.
Brandy, I know a family in my church who's children have both Autism and Aspergers. Congrats on your new position as an assistant teacher! Have a blast!
