In October I'm doing the challenge of being a vegetarian for a month. It's kind of an experiment to understand why people are vegetarians, how it affects my health and whether it makes any difference to the world.

If you are a vegetarian then it would be great if you could write a few words about why you are a vegetarian and how strict you are about it (are you vegan, do you eat fish etc). I'll use the best ones in a blog post at the start of the month and I'll happily put names and blog links with them so there's a bit of incentive.

Hope I get some replies!

You can read all about my journey here - The Road to Full Vegetarianism

My husband & I aren't vegetarian, but we have "flirted" with it so to speak.  Partly because of financial reasons (often we can make the same meal cheaper if it's just meatless) and partly for health reasons.  I'm not against eating meat specifically, but I do worry about the way they are treated and the different hormones/preservatives that are so prevalent in today's food.  I grew up in a very rural area where a large majority of my food was hunted or grown by my family, it was much more comforting when I felt secure in where my food came from.  I definitely want to increase my consumption of fruits, veggies, etc but I doubt I will ever go full vegetarian and no way I could do vegan.

I do definitely agree with the above commenter about fast food loosing it's appeal.  We've tried really hard to cut out trips to fast food places, and on the few days we cave it almost never ends up being as good a we remembered.  It will usually take maybe 10 minutes before we start feeling sick afterwards.

I'm now over two weeks in and still haven't eaten any meat! My latest post for Veggie Month is about the treatment of animals in the meat industry (check it out here). If anyone's got any thoughts or info on this it would be great if you could comment or reply on this forum. Thanks!

October and therefore the challenge are over. Find out how I did and what I thought about it all in my final post on the subject

The End of Veggie Month

I'd like to say great job making it 21 days through your challenge, Dan. Too bad I wasn't around earlier to give some helpful tips. One of the most important things that seems to deter people from remaining vegetarian/vegan is that they don't learn how to cook beforehand. I've been vegan for just shy of 7 years, and I will admit that the first year or so I was eating quite poorly until I learned how to cook, how to shop, and expanded my horizons as far as ingredients were concerned. We definitely can't live on veggie burgers and plain macaroni forever.

I hope that you continue to learn more on the subject and keep up the effort to at least incorporate vegetarian dishes into your meal plan. Feel free to contact me if you have questions!

Stay healthy!
