Being kept or being a prostitute? Is there really a difference?

My friend sent me this article in the NY Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/12/magazine/12sugardaddies-t.html?_r=1

It's called "Keeping up with being kept", and is about the site 'seekingarrangements.com'. It's a dating site specifically for people looking for sugar daddy/baby relationships. The article is very interesting (though a little long) so if you have time to read it, you should.

What was most interesting was the discussion on subtle difference between being a sugar baby and being a prostitute. Do financial transactions define a relationship as prostitution, or not? In some of these girls opinions, staying in an unhappy marriage for financial benefit is the same deal.

Thoughts?

Doesn't look like there is a bit of a difference the way that article describes it.
I agree - the author doesn't seem to think so. But some of the girls themselves don't see it that way, which I thought was interesting.
I haven't read the article because I don't have time, but I'd say the only difference is that a prostitute will essentially sleep with anyone for money while a kept person has a specific arrangement with one person. Although, on second thought they might choose to have an arrangement with more than one person.

Still it seems like this is a choice, whereas prostitution seems to be more of a necessity (drug addicts for example) than a real choice. It's possible I live in a bubble.
That is nuts!

That sort of thing ( in Los Angeles you can't swing a dead cat without hitting someone involved in a relationship like that) drives me nuts, so admittedly I'm biased, but...

I think if you find yourself having the need to sit down and rationalize why you're not prostituting yourself, then you're probably prostituting yourself.
That's a good point.
If prostitution is defined by being paid to engage in intercourse with someone, then this certainly looks like prostitution. And if there's a fine line between this and prostitution, then let it be said that those people are being paid say just to be around the sugar daddy. If they're being paid by him in excess of a certain amount, then they must be deemed an employee and should be taxed for this income.

This is why prostitution should be legal. Regulated, taxable, etc.
