Hmmm, this is a really hard one! I feel like I've received so many words of wisdom that have made me think about things just a little bit different.
I'm not sure if this qualifies as advice, but I remember when I was younger I would always say, "it's not fair!" to my mom, just like every other teen. Then she would always stop what she's doing, turn to me and say- "Where did you get the idea that life is fair?" I just always remember that moment as being really humbling.
Another quote I really like is this:
"You don't make something to become famous or be cool or get stoned, you do it because it's amazing and it moves you, and it's important. and then all the other stuff is just a gift."- L. Gabrielle Penebaz
I just love that quote, hmm, yeah now that I look at this post, neither of these really qualify as advice. But hey- it works right? :)
"Honey," someone once said to me-- obviously they knew me well enough to call me honey, but not well enough to call me "Asshole"-- "the train's going this way. You have three choices: you can either jump on and see where it takes you, run like hell in the other direction, or throw yourself underneath it. Whatever you choose, though, just remember-- it's going this way."
People have also told me to go fuck myself-- but I'm not quite sure that's advice as much as it is a personal request.
My Midwestern farm-boy father, after an exasperatingly long fight about whether or not I could travel to Egypt by myself, just started shaking his head. Gathering himself up and looking me straight in the eye, he finally said:
"Fuck it, go for it....Just remember, don't start any fights, but you goddamn well better finish 'em."
Those little nuggets of advice, though simple and a bit funny, stayed with me through some weird, some frightening and some absolutely amazing traveling experiences.
