The Bloggers With The Most To Say

I'd like to start a round robin in which we can critique each other's blogs (and thus receive some great advice from fellow bloggers).  The way I see it going is: the next person to post has to critique my blog (constructively).  The person after has to critique the previous blog, etc.  You are welcome to critique additional blogs, but this way everyone gets some advice.  I know it will be a little tough because we all have different styles and subject matter, but I think we can all contribute something.  And... go!

This is a fab idea! Okay, I'll start.

First off, I do like this blog and I enjoyed reading it, despite not usually being a reader of mommy/baby-related blogs.

LOOKS:Your layout is basic, yet it looks great! (I personally like the stretch Minima.) Totally ADORE the header! I see that you have ads, but they're placed subtly beneath posts ad your sidebar is nice and tidy! The only thing I'd suggest is perhaps changing some colours on the layout (like the post titles etc) as the default Blogger ones are still there.

CONTENT: You have some great posts - mainly personal life posts - which are enjoyable to read. I don't follow this kind of blog usually so can't really compare it to any others that I like, but you're a good writer. And the pics are adorable, too!
Elle, it looks like you got skipped, so I'll go. I love your layout; aesthetically pleasing, but not in such a way that it's hard to read. Nice mix of short and long posts, and some pics. You don't have a lot of posts, but I like your writing style. The only critique I can think of, and this might be just personal opinion, but I'd make it more personal. I know it's always a thin line on how personal to get, but i do find the more personal a blog is the better (at least if it's a personal blog, i.e. not fashion advice, or politics, etc.) But I don't, from looking through it, know who Elle is. What is YOUR personality? What means a lot to you? etc.
So...this means I have to critique your blog and the next person that leaves a comment critiques mine???
You critique Elle's, the next person critiques yours.
And Elle, you were almost too kind (but thank you!)
Ella Unread,

your blog seems kind of like a Myspace page to me. It's nice and the posts are short. Maybe lessen the number of widgets on the right side of the page? That aspect feels a little cluttered.

Content wise I would say you should come up with a personal definition about what your blog is "about." Right now it's a cool thing to show your friends, but I am not sure why a stranger would read it. Basically, try to focus a little. Of course, if that's what you are going for, it isn't a big deal.
I'll give this one a whirl. I guess I get Karen.

First off, for some reason I really like dark themes on web pages and blogs. I don't know why exactly, but I do. One thing to watch for is that I noticed on your post "I am" you used black text on your dark background which is a little hard to read makes it a little hard to find out who you are, but I figured it out ;-). My only other thoughts on formatting is the centered text. Your newest posts read like poetry so the formatting doesn't bother me, but sometimes I find it easier to read regular left aligned paragraphs. In the end, it doesn't really bother me per-se, it was just something that I noticed, and it did make me ask myself if I was reading poetry or not.

Content-wise, not being a parent it is a little harder for me to relate personally to some of your posts, but I certainly gain some insight. Of the posts that I read, I found many interesting, and I would probably come back and read more!
I suppose I'll join in the fun.

Alex, I'm totally diggin' the avatar. The rotoscope look is hot.

On to your blog...

PAGE DESIGN. I really liked the design of your page. I'll start with the header. The trees with the sunrise or sunset peeking through is a great look, especially with the water in the backdrop. Your menu bar is pretty decent...simple yet convenient. I like how you divided the page in 3 parts with your tweets, links, and any other user-specific information on the left, the blogs in the middle, and the calendar and tags on the right. I may have to use that set up in my blog.

BLOG CONTENT. I have tremendous love for bloggers who write from a personal perspective as opposed to feeding me information that I can easily find on Google (the latest entertainment news, political commentary, etc.). You make good use of the photos included in the blogs, in regards to relevancy. I didn't see any major grammatical errors. I read 8 blogs and I can honestly say that each one of them was well connected, beginning to end.

Good job!
Interesting! never heard of a round robin.

I'm joining.

Blog layout: Very simple, user friendly, the default for blogspot. It's readable but it gets a little tiresome for the eyes. I think it's the white on black. black backgrounds sometimes gets a little too much for long stints. Especially since you tend to write very long blog entries.

Blog content: You write VERY long entries. and for me that's hard to stay focused. I think it'll be easier on the eyes if you used more pargraph breaks and more pictures. You come across as very introspective and intelligent :) and very thorough.
i read your BCS summary and regarding 2005, i have to disgree with your rose bowl analysis that Michigan didn't lose the game and only lost time (UT won, man :) Vince Young is extraordinary. haha then again I bleed orange..

suggestion on content: i see that you're in japan! i'd love to read more about/see more about what it's like to live in Japan.

Overall, i don't know if I'd come back only because i have a short attention span and entries are super long and hurts my eyes. but you do come across as someone with a lot to say and i wouldn't mind having coffee with you and having great conversations.

I appreciate the critique and the feedback. I'm sorry if you feel that the entries may be long. I just write...without regard for what people may think about it. I'm guessing that's what makes my particular style of writing unpopular in this community. But then again, I started writing Life: The Juan Thomas Story to express thoughts that I wouldn't express in my journal. Thanks for the feedback though. I'd be delighted to engage in conversation though I'm not a fan of caffeine.
aw no caffeine? maybe another kind of beverage then.
i think it's great that you can write and write without worrying what people think. if anything you won't have too many drivers in your car :)
I'm actually not much of a talker. I converse with people on a number of topics but I'm not a flat-out talker.
