The Bloggers With The Most To Say

i'm a mommy blogger.  let's take a second and swallow the vomit before things get messy.  okay, awesome.  so yeah, i'm a mommy blogger but not your typical "i just cleaned up my kid's snot, do you wanna see, huh, do ya?" type bloggers so needless to say, i'm wary of getting my blog designed and having my family dancing on the page in cartoon form.  ope, i feel the vomit coming back up.

so my question is two-fold:

1. is it worth my time to get my blog designed?  would redesigning it up my follower/suscriber count or should i just go with what i got?

2. if redesigning is pertinent to you know of any good designers that wouldn't want to turn me into a lifeless cartoon bobble head?

thank you for your help.  and go to alabaster cow to see if you think my blog design is purdy enough just the way it is.

gracias,
ericka

wow thank you for the huge reply. i will get to this asap.
thank you guys so much! i'm relatively new to this especially since i've taken it more seriously only recently. and anthony you really know your stuff!
Unless a site looks TERRIBLE (glitter, movement, etc.), I won't leave if the writing attracts me. Your site is definitely *not* an eyesore. That said, I love having a design--it just makes me feel good when *I*look at it. I'm well aware that most of my readers only see it if they click through to leave a comment, so I don't stress over the niggling things.

I like the look of most Wordpress themes over Blogger--I made that switch myself, and find that it looks cleaner--someone else mentioned all the free themes. They're amazing! Really.

And? Yay for no cartoons! Good for you!
thank you so much! can i ask how you switched from blogger to wordpress or maybe you have a good link with instructions. i've found some info on the internet but my deal is this:

i already bought my domain name so i believe i have a subdomain because i own my own domain through blogger. what is my next step to taking that subdomain over to wordpress? i've found info about this on wordpress.com but i'm a little confused. even though i know i own the rights to my domain name through godaddy.com, i purchased the name through blogger so i'm not sure if i have a godaddy account or not. not sure if you can answer these questions (or if you have any idea about what i'm talking about lol) but if you have any advice i'd love to hear it!
I am so not the right person for this! I bought my names through Google too, but I was able to switch them pretty easily from what I remember--but I self host, which is a whole new game.

If you're interested in self hosting, there are tons of articles about that. We use Bluehost, and haven't had a problem, but there are plenty of other options, and Wordpress has a list at wordpress.org. Wordpress.org is different than wordpress.com. If you ever want to advertise or anything like that, you'll need to be on the .org site, I think.

I found this site: http://www.labnol.org/internet/switch-from-blogger-to-wordpress/9707/
great i'll check it out!
First go to GoDaddy and make sure you have an account.

Deciding on a host all depends on what your requirements are. Bluehost is okay, my shared server is on HostGator though. I've really enjoyed using them and I haven't once seen the server go down.

Once you have your host set up they will give you the nameservers to point your domain at. Login to your GoDaddy account and change the DNS and put in the two nameservers your host gives you.

It can take a couple days for the domain to propagate but until then the IP address of the server will let you visit and what not. You will likely have Fantastico or something on your server backend which lets you automatically install scripts like WordPress. Those are cool for people who don't know anything but WordPress.org has some really simple instructions for installing it yourself and that's what I would recommend for ensuring upgrades in the future go easy.

If you want to do all this without interrupting your current site it will be a bit more complicated but it can be done.
thank you!
