I think this is along the lines of "you haven't made it until you get hate mail", one of those super-sucky things that comes along with wide-spread readership. You're right, I would totally rather have all honest readers, but I think being ripped off signifies in some twisted way that you are now "big" enough to be considered an entity, instead of a person, and people feel justified/ rationalized in stealing from you.
Like, people are more likely to shoplift in Walmart than in a mom & pop shop, more likely to present counterfeits at Bank of America than at your community credit union. The anonymity makes people feels impervious to consequences. Lame, but true.
