blogging at work
I know I'm totally guilty of it and many of you are to..
So here are a few questions..
Are you allowed to blog or just read them?
Or are you super secretive like me?
Do you post or just catch up on reading?
Just curious how people feel about this work blogging phenomenon.

I really shouldn't have, but at my previous job, I used to blog, read and respond. I'm currently looking for a new job, and whether it's online or not, I plan to avoid that behavior no matter what.

Holy crap, I just got caught doing this very thing and had to have a closed-door meeting in my boss's office. It was scary and I thought I was going to lose my job.

I don't but I think it really depends on what kind of job you have. You shouldn't blog at work because nobody should have to pay you to blog, but on the other hand say you're a receptionist and the phone isn't ringing.. It won't do anyone any good for you to stare out into air...

I read and post at work, but usually end up doing it during my lunch break. Or post then eat while I'm working. I try to balance it. I don't think I'd get reprimanded for it since I don't post about work and try not to abuse it, but I feel guilty if I spend too much time on it.

I do both - read and write. Not really on the down low, because I can just close my office door, so as not to be interrupted. ^_^ However, I believe that our generation is amazing at multitasking, so while it might seem like we are "wasting company time" - we're not. I have never let this (or chatting, texting, Facebooking, Tweeting, etc) get in the way of my work. We are just better at doing several things at once than older generations. Just my opinion.

i agree. We can do mulitple things at once, and as long as the quality doesn't suffer why not?

I don't see why not. We don't have attention span problems, we're just able to do more things at once than other generations. I think they are just jealous of us! ^_^

I so agree- our generation multitasks so much better than the ones before us! Also- I don't consider it to be corporate "time theft" when I answer work emails after 9pm at night and work after hours frequently. I consider my time to be more fluid- I like to do what I am in the mood for at that moment. If I need a 5min blog break to clear my head before/after a stressful meeting- I think it makes me perform better AND I don't resent my job when I check my iPhone in the evenings.

You are right! I think the regular 9 to 5 mindset isn't something our generation possesses. We work all the time! And doesn't the iPhone make it easy to read/write blogs? I use that thing for everything!

I definitely agree with you about multitasking! I feel so guilty when I read blogs, tweet and check Facebook but hey at least I'm getting my work done! I picked a really almost white background for my Twitter page so it's not so colorful and obvious that I'm tweeting when I have it open. I love Google Reader since it could look like I'm reading articles...however I save the ones unread that I want to comment on until lunch break or when I get home.

I haven't really used Google Reader much, but that's a great idea about the white background for Twitter!
In my opinion, there is absolutely no reason to feel guilty! If you can't tell the difference in the work between a person who spends the entire day doing one task and a person who is able to finish that task and maybe others while blogging/texting/chatting/tweeting/etc - then what does that say about the person who took all day on one thing?
