The Bloggers With The Most To Say

I kind of wanted to drop out of Business School - I'm in my third year and have a year and a half to go. I'm doing pretty badly at it - poor grades and all that jazz. But not because I'm stupid. It's because I wanted to do a degree in journalism and was never allowed to. I guess this is my very own way of rebelling. I was now planning to actually just drop out of college and head towards the west. For perspective, I am from Pakistan, and looking towards going for UK, USA or Canada. Does any one have any idea where I could possibly apply for work in a newspaper/magazine, considering I have not finished my undergrad as yet. And will probably transfer credits to a college where ever I go to wrap up this degree.

Need help. If you want more information, let me know. Thanks.

Go for it! Studying something you're not interested in is a TOTAL waste of time and money, especially if you already have your heart set on something else. You can get a journalism degree and job anywhere... the USA is a great place for it. Just about every university offers it, and it seems pretty popular. Maybe look into some sort of study abroad, and you can even get an internship in that program.
Peppers, thanks for you response. I would go to the US but that needs a lot of money - especially considering Pakistan's weak exchange value. And I have already doen three years of the degree I am pursuing so my parents aren't gonna let me drop out for nothing. It's just so frustrating. I need a place - maybe I should apply somewhere?
Although you've done 3 years, a lot of those credits would transfer into another program. So if you changed your major to journalism, you'd probably still only need to go another year or maybe two at the most, because no matter what your major is you need electives and required courses, etc. I would make an appointment with an adviser at a school and talk about it. Do you know of any schools in Pakistan that offer journalism? Another option is to finish your business degree and then go on to graduate school for journalism.

I recently changed my major from speech pathology to psychology. I had already been in school for 3 years, and I still only have 1 year left, so changing it didn't push back my graduation time at all, thankfully! I just would figure out your options, weigh the pros and cons, and then decide. And follow your heart... deep down inside you know what you want to do. :)
one of my best friends, Dano, went through college in the hopes to acquire an archeology degree. He dropped out in his last semester. The public consensus where I worked with him, said it was a stupid choice. You go through all that school and then he changed his mind and just dropped out with literally days left until graduation. Plus, if he got a degree in archeology, if he got a degree in anything, a lot more employers would hire a guy with a degree.

How I feel about it, is once I decide to do something, I finish it. Or else I'd wonder what I would've ended up with if I just stayed on course. Because, let's say I'm in your position, and I went with journalism, once something bad happens, I'd feel like "Dammit, I should've stayed with business." That's just my thought process.

Then you look at both majors. Business is "eh," and so is journalism. Business is a versatile degree that advances you in nothing. It's not like a nursing degree that helps you become a nurse. A business degree will help you do things that you could probably do with a GED or better yet, without any school whatsoever. Read Rework by Jason Fried. Journalism on the other hand... well I know one person with a journalism degree that has a journalism job working for some newspaper. she has a blog, it's called datemedc.blogspot.com. Check her out, she's awesome. Check out my blog too, because I too have felt the cold finger of being awesome. The thing about journalism is that there's little to no jobs, so... kites.

Me, I'd be lying if I said I didn't want or think or attempt to go into journalism. I went through aviation, communications, business- too much random shit that I didn't know before. I feel, because I don't have lucky parents or enough money, that I have one shot and one shot only at this, so although I feel like a writing degree would be the way to go, with also the largest margin of scholarships, I would also need to pick a job that would be able to pay my student loans.

That's enough talk for now, what do you think.

P.S. i just thought of this. A good choice is to see if you could get a degree that's sort of branching off towards business that has a lot of the same classes that you've finished. For example, economics.
You should definitely go for what you really want to do. You are still young and have time to chase your dreams. I don't really know where you could work but I think you should definitely go for it.
Though dropping out after three years is a big change, you only live once. If a degree in journalism is what you really want, then you should totally do it. I don't have much advice to give on where you should go or how you should make this happen, but I think you're on the right track. Keep searching for new opportunities and I'm sure you'll find the right one. :)
I think you should follow what your heart tells you to do. If you want to do journalism go for it. At the end, it's your happiness on the line. Google journalism courses and start applying...
theres no reason you can't get both
very true
your true!

P.S. I find the name Barbara, to be incredibly sexy
You guys!!! I would totally apply right NOW except applying/going requires lots of money - which is why I'm totally unable to do anything. AND why is also why I would much rather drop out, get a job and then resume studies. Ugh. Everything is so confusing.
ummm. .. so do you go all the way???
