The Bloggers With The Most To Say

What do you do is someone steals your words?

Both Lindsay (http://www.birdykins.wordpress.com) and I (http://hannahmiet.com) had our words stolen and remixed by "The Reluctant Laundress" (http://reluctantlaundress.wordpress.com/2010/01/25/verging-on-a-nig...) without credit.

I have a creative commons license, and left her a comment asking for credit or removal. What would you do in this situation? And has this happened to any of you before?

Not sure what I would do in this situation, but that really, really sucks. So sorry this happened to you.
I would CUT the person. That's soo not cool. I'm sorry you had to go through that.

You should file a report to wordpress too then. In fact, everyone here should help you reporting it. More people the easier for the blog to be shut down, right?
How did you find out? That's too bad. What can you do in this situation? I think that this is one of the negative aspects to blogging. Copyright laws are already vague, especially when it comes to the internet. I think what you do was good. I hope you keep us updated on what she says back to you.
I probably would've done the same thing you did. I just don't understand why someone would do that for a blog. I guess I see blogs as personal things and don't see what using someone else's words would accomplish.

But I just tried clicking on her blog and it was taken down. So at least it's taken care of. For now.

How did you find out anyway?
Lindsay alerted me to it on Twitter.

I got an email from the Blogger in response to my comment, and she removed the stolen post and apologized profusely. I guess that was the best start, though if she hadn't done so I would have taken further measures.

Thank you for responding, and for the condolences. There is a website that is really helpful: http://www.copyscape.com/

You should check it out, just in case someone has done the same with your words...
Me neither - I clicked the link and asked for a login and password and I don't have one with wordpress so I can't see it.
I had this happen to me and I flipped out on the guy. He apologized and took it down.
Wow. Who does that? Lame.
I'd ask them to remove it before making a big thing of it.
It happens a lot, the first time it happened to me was only a few months after I started blogging, some guy told a story almost the same as mine - just changing it up a bit - and someone happened to see it and send it too me. It was years ago there were fewer blogs then, I commented on his site and he just laughed and basically said tough. A woman did it a few months later and I commented on her post and she deleted my comment. I then posted what she did about it on my blog ...she removed her post. That was as confrontational as I've ever bothered to be as not I don't care if people take the stuff or not, there are so many out and out scrapers not to mention those who take content and shake it around and make it there own that it would be a full time job for anyone to worry about it.
What a sad person. I have been inspired by other peoples blogs before and written my thoughts about it but to straight steal it is wrong.
yes... have your work copywritten... if youre published by reputable magazines or something your published work should automatically be copywritten. it's infuriating but there is not much to be done unless youre making money off your own work or someone else is making money off your work. in that case the easiest way to claim ownership is to have these things copywritten. the bad thing about the internet is it is an open market of information...almost anyone can steal your words and get away with it unless youre so notable people know it is yours for sure.
Last year, one person used my posts as well as another three/four other blogger's posts and passed them off as her own. The posts in question were not remixed but left practically in tact with very few changes. Plagiarism is something I take VERY seriously and I called her out on it publicly on my blog. (If I remember correctly this was after another blogger had already emailed her and got no response.) Within a day, her entire blog was removed by Blogger as several people filed complaints against her.

Thanks for posting this. Blogging--especially personal blogging--can be a rewarding experience and it is awesome when your post can inspire another person to write something. But stealing someone's exact words (without credit) can never be justified to me.
