The Bloggers With The Most To Say
I'm naturally a pretty goofy person and though I do feel that being yourself is always best and that my skills and so forth speak for themselves, I learned some time ago that I needed to make a conscious effort to tone down my personality in professional settings.
That said - I have not always been successful in interview situations and I think a component of that is that people can sense it when you're being inauthentic. So I tend to think being honest and true to yourself is the best way to go. What do you think?
(And also, if you are a lady, do you think that makes a difference? I used to try to avoid using humor/laughing because I know I can come off as ditzy and being jokey obviously doesn't help. But I revised my opinion when I thought about how my male colleagues always use humor/joke and it doesn't reflect poorly upon them - is it different for a woman?)

I was at a job interview once, at a place I had actually interviewed at before and failed miserably.
The first time I had interviewed there, I didn't know it was a call center and they asked if I liked to talk on the phone, etc. And I said, 'No. Not at all.' And then the interview was basically over. Somehow I ended up with another interview there like half a year later and I didn't even realize it was the same place until the night before.
Anyway, I didn't even really want the job so I was totally relaxed. It was a group interview and at one point the lady asked if, 'I knew any languages.' And I paused a second and responded with, 'You mean besides english?' And a few of them laughed, and one guy said, 'Ya, I was gonna say.'
Anyway, I got the job there, and I ended up totally hating it because I hate every job ever, and ending up quitting. But still. I GOT IT.
The moral of the story is. Don't care too much.
Permalink Reply by Rocket on May 6, 2011 at 5:25pm I think you should be authentic, yet appropriate on the jokes. I tend to use a lot of humor naturally in situations. If you learn to balance them, you can come off at ease with yourself and more interesting than the rest. I'm pretty sure that's a plus for your potential employers.
Permalink Reply by Kaitlyn call me Kate on May 6, 2011 at 9:52pm i find the best tactic at job interviews is to mirror the interviewer's personality the best you can. so what is appropriate is based on your judgement of the interviewer. i wouldn't go by rules just be perceptive and act comfortable.
