The Bloggers With The Most To Say

I just wrote a new blog post titled "Zombie 101" where I discuss cool courses some universities offer in the United States. Unfortunatly, I went to UCSB and there weren't many oppertunities to take interesting courses outside of your particular field of study. I want to know if you have taken any cool/intresting/unusual classes and if so, what they are? I found some really cool ones while researching for my blog post. Hope you will all check it out and comment! Thanks

I took a one credit ballroom dance class which is really not that unusual, except that since I graduated a year early from college, with the exact number of credits needed, it was necessary!

I took a Shakespeare and Film course which was awesome.
I'm takign abnormal psychology right now. Its not really unusual, but i'm an engineering major so its not that wide-spread in my field... Its really interesting too :)
I think one of the more unusual courses I took was one that focused solely upon "cults" or more properly: new religious movements

...we also once spent an entire class listening to bob marley, which is to say that we had a really cool prof so that made it even doper
I had one similar but it was called Religion and Violence. We looked at extremist religious groups. Watched a bit of Jesus Camp, which might be one of the scariest movies I've ever watched! ;)
Not really. My favorite was one about Children and Their Families Under High Stress. It was a fascinating class, but doesn't have the "oh shit! that's sweet!" factor in my opinion. Hah.
I took Shakespeare on Film too!

I also took a Scenic Painting class, for theatre, which I adored.
I didn't exactly take anything on the same coolness level as Zombie 101, but I did take a class called American Masculinities which was REALLY interesting. There are so many classes on feminist studies, I thought it would be cool to look at the other side that people have forgotten about. I really learned a lot, especially since it was about America, where there are so many different cultures and people. Hence the plural "masculinities." It's really sad to see how boys and men are portrayed in our society - especially in TV, movies, and commercials - and the expectations to live up to that ideal. We all got to do a long research paper at the end of the semester of a subject of our choosing -- I chose to look at the Jewish gangsters of the early 20th century like Bugsy Siegel and Meyer Lansky who were the big-time gangsters in America before the Italians -- who knew Jews could be so bad-ass? Another classmate did the portrayal of men in Disney movies which I thought was awesome.
I took anger management for psych majors. I was angrier by the end of the class, and I am never angry! It was ridiculous.
I once took Ancient Greek Sexuality. Interesting, and VERY hard to study. I failed the class. It was the first time I tried something really really different and I failed. Up until that point I was an A student. And I consider myself to be well-rounded, but that kind of sealed a doorway for me trying new and exciting things for a while. Can't really blame me, though. Perhaps it was just the content. Looking at ancient statues, paintings, frescoes and pottery of men craddle robbing boys just coming into puberty didn't sit well with me.
I took a freshman seminar class called Breaking Mirrors: Superstition and Culture which was all about superstitions. We played with the Ouija board and had our professor hypnotize us. I also took a class called Drugs and Drug Abuse, where we learned all the ins and outs of recreational and illegal drugs and their effects.
I took this class that was a biology course. My degree was in Psychology and we had to have 4 classes in Science to get our degree. This bio class was first year and all about Animals - it was called Natural History.

At my university we had videos online that we could watch for huge courses, so instead of GOING to class, you watched it on Demand on your computer. So of course, most people left it till the week night before the exam and tried to watch them all in time.

This Natural History class was AMAZING though. It was like watching a Canadian version of Crocodile Hunter. The prof was such a character, and most of the class was his amazing photographs of plants and animals. My boyfriend would watch the class with me just because it was so entertaining and interesting.

I also took a class called Sex & Sociology in my final year. The prof was this REALLY old man with a British accent, he would talk about sex and I felt like I was listening to a documentary. But having an old man talk about his sex life... WEIRD.
