Sometimes it's really humbling to receive a pitch from a business/website. At least the first few times...it definitely was for me.
It's just really annoying when the pitch is completely off topic for my readers...
Bloggers are also starting to become regarded higher in the "media" hierarchy. As bloggers become more "professionally regarded", they can expect to get more pitches, same as traditional media outlets.
Do you like getting pitched? Do you ever accept pitches?
Heh I get the same pitch every month from this lady, representing a site that has literally nothing to do with my blog. I really should respond but its so clear that the whole thing is automated. Certainly not the smart way to do things.
Yeah, there's one guy who wants me to exchange links with him and his site isn't remotely related to my blog or my interests. He keeps emailing me. He says that "it would be great value to my readers" if I linked to him. Um, no.
No negative responses. But I think that is because I never did a giveaway (don't like most giveaways) and probably won't do another one unless the item is something pretty sweet - like a new laptop!
Good point --- over 'monetized' (is that the word du jour?) blogs are too much like infomercials for any kind of reading/enjoyment, which is why most people visit blogs to begin with.
haha yea I've been on both sides of that fence as well. When doing blogger outreach, I try to aim for the middle range. People who have a loyal readership, but they're not bursting at the seems with traffic and pitches. They're usually the best bloggers to work with too (=
At the same time, someone with 100 extremely loyal readers can be better than someone with 10,000 readers who don't give two shits about what they have to say. So it all depends.
What I don't like is when I get pitched for something completely unrelated to me and my blog, it shows they don't do their research. Just read a few posts! I also hate when it's assumed because I'm female and a blogger that I'm a mom blogger. I've received way too many pitches because I'm "one of the top mommy bloggers". I won't write about a product/site/whatever just because you send me a press release. I also won't write about your contest. I won't write about something if you give me your crappy product. I won't write about it if you give me your crappy product to giveaway.
I think a lot of bloggers just take anything just to take it and say, hey I got this for free! They get caught up in the contests and giveaways and lose sight of their content.
I'm very, very particular about what I accept and write about. But I have been offered some pretty fantastic opportunities because of my blog and I'm very grateful for those. It's definitely flattering when I get a legit one though.
I think that's very important, to know what's good for your blog readers, and be a bit selective about the opportunities that come your way. It's exciting for bloggers when the first pitch comes in, because it reassurance that what they're doing is valuable.
