The Bloggers With The Most To Say

After spending another weekend with my family, who live fairly close, I began thinking about how wonderful it's been to move back to the area after 4 years far, far away from my family. It was a decision my husband and I made, and I'm pretty happy about it.

It got me wondering about other twenty-somethings: Do you live near your family? As 20-somethings, we're now more mobile and have a say in where we live. Did you jet away as soon as possible? Would you hate living close to them? Do you wish you'd be closer? Are your parents down the street?

I live close. I live far. I love it. And I hate it.

How's that for a confusing answer?

I have family that live within a 15 minute drive from me and family that live a 20 hour flight from me (they live in Auckland, NZ)!
Crazy! So you do love living close or hate it? Do you love that some of your family lives super far away? :)
I am far from all of my family. I would like to live a little closer. Like next state sort of close. We were looking at moving somewhere the would put us about a 6-8 hour drive. That is close enough to visit but not close enough to see each other every day. I love my family & talk to them often, but I do not feel a need to live in their pockets or have them live in mine.

Where I am now it seems most people have all lived in the area for several generations. They all live within blocks of each other. I don't really get it myself, since many of the people I knw here don't even seem to like their family most days.
Funny story - my husband's grandma lived across the street from her sister for 40 years. They never talked because they really didn't like each other.

Um, crazy much?

So I guess living close isn't always good if you actually HATE each other!
I know people like that here. not across the street, but in the same town. They only see each other when they happen across each other in the store. It's so Strange to me.

saw in another comment you moved every 3 years. military brat too or something else?
I live far away from my family and while it's been really good for me, I now wish I lived closer. Seeing my family twice a year just isn't enough. I hope to move back after I finish grad school, though I'm not sure how likely that is.
See, I am SO glad that I lived far away for 5 years (college + 1), I think it made me more confident, independent, etc, etc.

It makes me sad when people never get that chance to figure out who they are separate from their family.

But I have no shame in saying, "I've been away and I realized I like having the around!"
I agree! it's important to get away from what you know to learn who you are without them. I see so many people who keep the same roles their whole lives since they've never been away from it to learn to be anything else.

I love my family, but we are all independant people. We like to be close enough to visit but not depend on each other for everything like people here do.
my parents grew up in this city. they raised me in this city. my entire family lives here. 22 years of having everyone 10 minutes away. and, i'm ready for a change. it's been nice.. but i'm the black sheep of my family. the only person i will miss is my dad. and, i think he's the only one who will miss me.
I moved around every 3 years growing up, so I can't even IMAGINE 22 years of being in the same place.

That's sort of crazy.

Where are you thinking of going?
south georgia, or south florida. we're in central florida right now, so either would be about a 3 hour move. just enough space, i think. (:
I moved to Long Beach, California with my now husband from Alabama. My mother is my best friend, and I still miss her all the time. But I've found that it it makes the rare times we see each other that much more fun and special. Plus we talk everyday. So I guess I'm in the middle of loving it and hateing it :)
