I've been on all sides - promoting blogs to get followers, not promoting blogs and not getting many followers, and not promoting blogs and getting a lot of followers.
Do you blatantly promote your blog? And if so, how? (I realize this site could be considered promotion, but to me it's just more of a community of people who love blogging).
I dont really do any promoting of my blog. I just follow other blogs and comment regularly on others. I also partipate in www.theblogfrog.com communities.
The only promotion I do is telling friends and family to check out my blog. I would always love more people to come by check out the page and if they dig the writing then follow my writing. I am currently going to school at NMSU. A little college town in Southern New Mexico. Its a sleepy little town with some old ideals, a lot of retirees and a bit of college aged folks. Some interesting culture and some amazing mountains to take photos of and/or hike. I am double majoring in creative media and journalism. So flash, focus, record, the pen and the pad drive my ambitions. I am currently trying to find a way to move up to Santa Fe, NM. I would like to move up into the mountainous regions of New Mexico where there are trees, snow, and more like minded people.
I don't promote... I let things play out as is. As much as readership means to me, it is not why I write. I write for the clarity it brings me and the connection I found in myself when I have a voice.
I do promote new posts on facebook and twitter, if I think they would add value to someone who was reading them. I have my site's address in my signature in email addresses, and make sure to put it in my profiles for social networking sites. I have never tried paid advertising.
I do promote my blog. And I don't think there is anything wrong with it...which is the edge I'm sensing from many of the other commenters here. I believe it's all in the technique you use. For example: random person relevantly commenting on my blog post and then leaving a link after the end of the comment--no problem. Perfect.
EX. 2: leaving your link on "We Love Comments!" the 20sb group ...expected--fine. Perfect. Constatly sending me messgaes on why I should read your blog to the point of spamming--no. Not fine at all. Certain blogs are promoted certain ways. My blog is personal, so I don't promote it like a business or a public media resource. But I do check out others' blogs (and comment relevantly) and 20sb to exchange or leave a link on either.
Promotion is not "black and white" there is a proper way to do all things. And as a new blogger, does it not make sense to want to promote your blog? You just have to learn the right way for you (that is, if you're interested), and it won't seem obnoxious and/or "in your face"-y... unless that's what you're gong for.

I promote the snot out of it on twitter - and I have networked blogs on Facebook so my posts pop up on my profile - but that's still passive because it doesn't guarantee anyone will actually click on the links. I try to be active in forums like this and what not - but I think you can join all the forums and social networking sites you want - but if you don't have interesting things to say - people aren't going to read you.
A couple of months ago I figured out how to set it up so my facebook profile automatically publishes my posts. But I don't give any commentary on them, they are just there. My feeling is that if I am doing something right in the blog itself, people will come back and connect with me. I don't need to push it in their faces.
