The Bloggers With The Most To Say

Why are a lot of people generally so worried about getting a lot of readers?
I'm not really saying it's a bad thing, I'm just curious as to why it matters so much?

It seems to me that when you have a large amount followers, it's easy to miss out on who everyone is.
I emailed a blogger today that has almost 9,000 followers, and I got back an automated response. I can understand the need to do that with so many emails coming through in a day, but I found it kind of sad and impersonal, as well.

Is it more important for you to have a good relationship with your readers, or is having a large number of followers more important to you?

I blog mostly for myself but having readers is good too. I enjoy their feedback and I try to either respond by email or post a response on my posts. I just think it's a courtesy thing. I also check out blogs. I may not follow, but I try to comment so they know I visited.

Also? If I follow a blog that means I'm active. I am actively commenting and trying to engage that blogger. Honestly? If you have no intentions of interacting with me, please don't follow. I'd rather have people commenting, emailing, etc than a bunch of weirdo lurkers. ;)
9000 seems a bit much to me, but I like having a "decent" following. Right now I have 12, according to the widget on my blog, and I know a few on Facebook read my posts too and comment via the link on there. Sure, I would like to be in the 30-50 range, just so I really feel like "hey, people are reading and responding to me, that's kinda cool!"

Before I had any I sometimes questioned if anyone was reading it all, and I guess it makes me feel good inside to know that people are reading what I write and that maybe something I wrote inspires someone, or touches them, or has some kind of (hopefully positive) affect on them, ya know?
some people want to meet new friends... and enjoy getting feedback on their thoughts and posts. I guess blogging can be used as an online diary or as a social network. Depends on how you look at it.
I think that it depends on what your blog wants to be. I personally have quite a small bunch of people with whom I keep a nice dialogue going. It makes for a lovely experience. It's nice to have wildly successful blogs I'm sure, and I'll never be featured but for me, the small little group works well :)
I feel the same way a lot of times. I also work for my school's radio/newspaper, so I have to balance the "doing it for myself" vs. the self-pleasing and ego-stroking of "doing it for others." I have 3 followers for the blog I started in January (my girlfriend and myself being two of them) and have gotten a couple of random comments here and there. For me, I look at it all as writing about stuff I'm interested in that I think other people might be interested in too. If the "blogosphere" does, fantastic! I know I absolutely love reading blogs that I can relate to. If not, at least its still something I had fun writing about. Hopefully the people who care about what I'd write about will find me, because I know I'd like to hear from them too.
I think having a great relationship with my readers is first and foremost the most important thing. But part of getting to that stage is through self-promotion - letting people know that your blog is out there. And if they check it out and like what they see, they'll become a reader/follower. So I think the two go hand in hand.

The one thing I find challenging is keeping up with all your readers. I have 80-something followers, and I don't follow all of them back, but I do try to actively engage with readers who frequently comment on my posts or leave a thoughtful remark on an entry.
I see it from both perspectives. Personally, I don't worry about how many readers I get. I actually would be happy if a few more people read my blog (I only have 3 followers =[ ) but overall, I enjoy writing my blogs and that is the most important thing. Want to know something funny? Lol, when I am writing my blog I pretend that I have a whole bunch of followers who love reading my blog and I sort of give myself a spotlight! Haha, hey, I gotta entertain myself somehow! =P
