The Bloggers With The Most To Say

I feel like this forum could also be called, Ask Nico. Luckily I'm totally okay with begging for tech savvy minds to think for me while I play with butterflies and silly words.

I've had a domain name for my blog for a few months now and haven't been brave enough to do anything with it. Anyone have any experience integrating it into my Blogger account so that posts will look like http://www.noordinaryrollercoaster.com/whateverthehellthepostisabout ?

Any input appreciated!

You should be able to do it without much problem by logging into your Blogger account and then clicking on...

Settings - Publishing - Custom Domain - Switch to Advanced Settings

Your old blogspot address should be replaced by your new domain name. So this is what it should look like in the end...

It's that easy? I've been staring at that option for weeks....
Haha, Nico isn't the only one working this forum. ;)

David's howto will get you partially there, but you're going to have to modify your DNS settings as well. Follow David's instructions, then continue reading this post.

According to WHOIS, you registered your domain with Name.com. I'm going to assume this is right, but if not, a little massaging and the steps below will still work for you.

  1. Log into your Name.com account.
  2. Navigate to My Account > noordinaryrollercoaster.com > DNS Management.
  3. If you have anything set up for the host name/alias 'www', take a second to delete it. (There don't appear to be any records like this that I can see, but if there's something I'm not, it's a good idea to double check.)
  4. Add a new CNAME record for the host/alias 'www' that points to ghs.google.com. Make sure to click Submit when you're done.

At this point (it might take a few minutes for the DNS updates to propagate around, but if you can't use your domain after 15 minutes or so, post back and we can do a little investigative work.
Okay - working through it. Did David's steps and went through yours as well but got this error:

A domain name must use our NS1.NAME.COM, NS2.NAME.COM, NS3.NAME.COM, and NS4.NAME.COM name servers in order for DNS Management to function.

Thoughts?
Wait - I'm stupid. That might not be an error but something entirely different meaning that my request was completed. That being said - my blog can now not be reached either through bensprblog.blogspot.com or noordinaryrollercoaster.com. Is it just propagating? Should I not freak out?
No, that's a legitimate error. Poke around your Name.com control panel for name server settings.
??

That looks right. I can't see them with DNS queries, though.
Okay Nick - you are fantastic. Thanks to your help I've come further than I have on this stuff than in the months that I've been sitting on these domains. Two remaining questions:

1) http://www.noordinaryrollercoaster.com is working. http://noordinaryrollercoaster.com is not - which doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Is there some weirdo setting that I'm missing?

2) My feed is now botched...I was probably naive to think that it would just keep working but it doesn't. Is there a way for me get my old feed synced up or overriding the new one just so that I don't lose everybody?
1. In addition to the cname for www you need to create an A record for @. Follow the steps Nick gave you for adding the www cname to do this.
Alright...I think I know how to add an A Record but what am I entering in? 'www'? '@'? Do I still include the ghs.google.com?

Thanks!
Dan: An A record is incorrect for this case, as A records are for resolving to IP addresses. You want to use a CNAME, or Canonical Hostname, record to facilitate another lookup (in this case to the address of ghs.google.com).

Ben: To make http://noordinaryrollercoaster.com work as you want, you need to follow the same steps I already posted, but skip typing 'www' into the host/alias box. If you added the A record Dan described, remove it before adding the new CNAME record.
