I'm from a medium sized town in Pa, and every so often I think about just moving away. Anyone out there have experience with something similar? How did it work out? Any advice in general for me? I tend to be shy when it comes to meeting new people, but I think maybe if I were to start over somewhere new that I'd feel more motivated.
I've never done it--- but, truthfully, it's something I've always wanted to do, too. Yet, I don't think I'd ever have the courage to do so. I feel like I'm on the brink of something--- I could become domestic; or I could run away for a grand adventure.
Sorry for not answering your question at ALL, I just felt like chiming in!
All opinions are welcome, lol. I look forward to adventures some day, but I'm just afraid if I visited somewhere awesome, then came home to where I live now I'd be depressed, lol.
i feel the exact same way. i don't feel brave enough to up and move out of state or cross country. i think something reasonable/managable for me would be to move to san francisco (still keeping it west coast) but i still don't feel brave! maybe someday ill have the momentum to do something big but not right now..
I've moved out from my parents house, but still lived within an hours drive of home. By "moved away" I was implying that you moved a few hours (or much more) away and sort of started new.
I just moved to Los Angeles from Cincinnati, OH for a job that I ended up quitting three months later. I'd been wanting to move for quite some time, but never had the motive to do so. And even though I quit my job, I plan on staying in California because it's been the best thing I've done for myself. I, too, am shy and haven't really established a solid network of friends out here yet, but I'm learning so much about myself in the process. I would definitely recommend moving out of your comfort zone!
If I did move, it would probably be out to CA. I have a strong tech background, and there's going to be a lot more opportunities out there for me than here. Another thing that draws me to CA is cheaper college costs. Even state schools in PA cost a ton. Whats the cost of living like in LA though? Can you pay rent with an entry level job?
Cost of living is definitely inflated in CA, as opposed to the midwest. There are ways to save money though (hello roommates-- which has helped in getting adjusted to the new area). My job was very entry level and barely paid the bills, which is one of the reasons I quit (granted it beat not having a paycheck). It was also very common for my co-workers who weren't entry level to have second jobs (most were bartenders).
cost of living in Los Angeles can be very expensive!
I moved here from D.C. in 2004 ( so it was less of a shock - D.C. is kind of expensive, too).
It depends on what neighborhood you want to live in - if you want to live in Hollywood you can do it (with roommates) with an entry level job, but it'd be more expensive then living in say, the valley ( more suburban).
Where in Pa?? I live in Pa too... and I've always thought about moving away. I've even been too the point where I had job interviews set up and appointments to look at apartments, but most of my family is here... and I don't want to move too far from them. If nothing is holding you back, I say go for it... see where the road takes you :) Good luck either way!
I'm in Scranton. (Northeast PA) And most of my family is in this area as well, but I just feel like if I don't try something new while I'm 25ish I might never have a chance.
I live near Harrisburg... although I've decided not to move (at the moment).. I have made major life changes recently... it's refreshing and I feel like an entirely new person! (not to say i'm not scared shitless... but it's a fear i'm embracing and growing from)
