The Bloggers With The Most To Say

Amanda Abella

Hey you! College graduates and aspiring writers I need your help!

I just graduated from college with a degree in Literature and did the backpacking in Europe thing. Now I'm back home, in the real world, in a crappy economy, and a not very good job market for writers in Miami. I have decided to take a couple of creative writing classes at the local university to polish up my skills however I need a job. All I want to do is write. I've never imagined doing anything else. I have a small column at Handmadenews, org which is great but I need a fixed income. So, how did you guys do it? How did you turn your English, Literature, Creative Writing, what have you degrees into careers? My problem is mostly that I don't know where to start and I'm afraid of finding a job where all I do is push paper and forget about what I really want to do.

Thanks in advance!

I wanted to write a serious response to this, but I just can't stop laughing.

I'm a creative writing major and I work in politics. It pays the bills, writing doesn't.

I'm sorry to be blunt - but no one I graduated with is really putting their degree to good use. The best they (and I) can do is get a job that pays the bills and never, never, never stop writing on the side. One day it'll pay you bills if you're really, really lucky. Till, then, you might have to do something else for a bit.

Good luck though - you'll need it in this economy! I know I do!

Besides, whatever you end up doing - it's all fodder for the tell-all. Working shitty jobs is part of life, and it gives you better stories than you could ever imagine. Truth really is stranger than fiction.
Everyone tells me I should go into politics. I dabbled in it and decided I would most certainly end up having an anuyerism lol
If you want freelance gigs, I'd check out craigslist and such. And don't write for free to "get the experience" -- sets a precedent.
Thanks for the advice!
Craiglist, About.com, Gather, Associated Content offer freelance type writing until you can find something more permanent. Not sure of any sources to write non fiction though.
I already sent some stuff to AC. I hadn't even thought of About.com or Gather. Thanks!!
Write for fun, is my advice. Whenever you write as a job, it becomes...a job.

And you will mess up. You will promise yourself you will write for 3 hours every night and then you wont. Forgive yourself for that and write. Blog, journal, text, email whatever. But write when you want to.
