How do you come up with banner ideas?
I'm trying to brainstorm ideas for a banner for my blog. I think mine is too dull and drab right now. I'm teaching myself how to use illustrator in order to make a better one.
How have you guys come up with ideas for your banners in the past?

I shoved a bunch of my photos together in Word. I know, classy, right?

For the longest time I had a picture of a road, since my blog is 'The Long Road Set' and then... i lost all touch with reality... of course I'm kidding. But I figured my blog is written words, so I used writing stamps in my favorite colors to create my current one.
I just let creative hit me and go with it.

I change my banner a lot. I mean, not all the time but every 3 or 4 months I get bored and want a new one. I just generally start with an image and go from there. Right now it's a pretty basic one that I put together on picnik. Maybe start with a color, photo, or a tone you want to have in mind and go from there?

I think it depends on the style of your blog. For mine, which is about me, I just put a picture of myself with the title. I think it works really well. I've done the same for other people that I have helped with designs.
What I think is most important is to have your title as the most obvious part of your header. And to keep it along the lines of what your blog is about. My title is Simply Kate so I kept the header simple. I know, totally cheesy, but I think it's mostly about just finding the tone of your blog and putting it into an image.

I went for simple. It's just a black box with yellow writing. I didn't want anything too crazy just because of the fact my background is glitter.

I generally take a photo of part of my face with my iPhone and then let Wordpress do the rest, but I understand if this is too difficult for most people because I am an artist and shit.

I just combined four photos that I thought represented what my blog is about (being Canadian, books, music and photos) - now obviously my blog is about more than that - but I feel it represents me well.

I was already illustrating the stories I tell in my blog so when I did one which I felt really represented me (sitting in bed with my laptop while watching tv) I thought it would be great to make into a banner. Try to do something that represents you, your personality and the theme of your blog all at the same time. Also I suggest you use Photoshop instead of Illustrator but that's my personal preference. To be fair I do work as a graphic artist so I kinda know what I'm talking about :)
