The Bloggers With The Most To Say

I hope I have put this in the right forum!

Just wondering with some of the funniest blogs around having comic/illustrations/cartoons on their blogs I wanted to ask what tools/software and applications other bloggers use to create them?

If I am not explaining myself well hit up Hyperbole and a Half or TheOatmeal for examples of what I mean.

Hyperbole and a Half has said that she uses Paintbrush (the Mac equivalent of MS Paint). My guess is that The Oatmeal uses Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop, but I don't know for sure. Hyperbole and a Half just uses her mouse to draw, as her drawings are pretty simple, but keep in mind that when you see decent illustrations, the artist has most likely scanned a sketch first, is using a tablet, or both.

If you're looking for a free "Photoshop" type of application, check out Gimp: http://www.gimp.org
I used to be fairly active with a comic-like-blog-thing... I would hand draw it, then ink it. From there it was scanned and edited in Photoshop.

Now, if I include a sketch or something... it's typically just a photo taken on my cell phone....

filleosophy is right though... some sort of photoshop program, and if you can afford it, a tablet.
I use Paintbrush for mine. I've been itching for a tablet but I'm holding off for now until the site makes a bit more monthly revenue. (Almost there!!)

I'm not trying to be rude, genuinely curious -- why do you use the exact same style as Hyperbole & a Half? Why not be creative and develop your own? Your comics are funny, but not original. I think you would see a lot more success for your blog and respect as an artist if you would be yourself instead of emulating H&aH. :)
To paraphrase her: There are really only so many ways to draw a face.

That said, I think it's pretty clear that as you go, you develop. As I learn and move forward, I'm sure my style will develop. Additionally, it's not like she's the first or only blogger to use MS Paint or pictures & words or any of it.
Also, you know, rereading this?

I kind of resent that you think I'm not being myself. I know you said that you don't mean to be rude, but you don't really know me; it's entirely possible that two people on this great big internet have a very similar voice. I suppose that's what you meant when you said my comics weren't original, that their tone is akin to someone else's. The drawing style certainly isn't, but I've addressed that. The voice? That's me.

I just wanted to defend myself -- and my work -- publicly since the comment was public, but if you'd like to continue, let's pull it private.
