The Bloggers With The Most To Say

How often do you check your email?

Do you have a separate one for work, etc.?

I'm just curious because it seems like certain people expect a reply within, like, hours, if not one day. I just don't involve myself in email that often--I feel like there can't be anything urgent enough to need a reply super quickly.

However, a supervisor on a project I'm working on called my mobile to ask if everything was okay, because he sent me an email Monday and I hadn't responded.

I obviously felt quite bad about this!

But...I mean, really? Is this the world we're living in? Am I behind the times?

I do check my personal email a bit more often than my others, but even then, people act like I'm being incredibly rude by not replying immediately. (People regularly verbalize this to me!)

So I'm wondering if I missed something...how often do you check yours?

When I attended GA Tech, we were told that we are responsible for every email that comes to us. We should be checking our email at least every couple hours or so. In fact, we should be checking our email whenever we have a break, and if we don't have a break, find a way to check it in the bathroom. That was the director of our orientation.

After 5 years of that, it just seems inherent to wake up, check email, shower, brush teeth, reply to emails, leave. I also check numerous times throughout the day, and then right before I go to bed.

Email has very much taken the place of phone calls - so it's like not returning someone's call for 3 days if you don't reply. Back in the day I remember checking my email once a week. Now it seems that if I don't check regularly things stack up so fast I have a hard time managing it all.

As far as different accounts - I currently have 7 email accounts. Several alumni accounts in there... but I use one for professional stuff, others for other stuff. I just use gmail to manage all of them and I pick and choose which one I send from.
Word.

Apparently my uni failed to drill that into my head!
I have four email accounts--work, personal, blog and spam (when I need to sign up for something and must provide an email address)

If you have a work email, there's no reason why you shouldn't have been able to respond to your supervisor because aren't you checking that while you're at work, several times throughout the day?

I dont check my personal stuff as frequently now bc I can't do as much personal stuff at my new job but I still check it about twice a day. As for when people expect replies, it depends. I know some of my friends check more frequently than others, so I know when to expect a reply by them...I think most people will feel ignored if you go longer than 3 days without a response.
He's actually the supervisor of a personal project, and not one that involves office work, but even so, I suppose I should have answered more promptly...

Yikes. Lesson learned! I am indeed behind the times!
I keep my email up whenever I'm on the computer...which is like 24/7. I don't always respond instantly (like if I need to get more information) but I'm pretty quick. I think thats the way most people operate now!
Well I envy your commitment to electronic mail! You=my email role model!
yeah i just thought it was common/good practice to respond to work emails in a timely manner (within an hour, or at least within that day). it's professional and there is a whole work etiquette around it. with personal email, i wouldn't worry as much.
everything goes to the blackberry. so ... yeah, i check email as it comes in
For work stuff, I usually have to reply same day. Honestly, I hate checking that email, so I sometimes avoid it. My blog email I check constantly, though, because I like that stuff.
I have two accounts: one personal and one for school.

With phone calls, texting, instant messengers and Facebook, I don't have any reason to communicate with anyone through my personal email account. I receive newsletters from bands or businesses and notifications from stuff like Facebook, Last.fm and twitter. All those emails are silently forwarded to my phone as I receive them, so I guess you could say I check my email as often as I look at my phone.

I'm sure all that will change when I get a "real job."

Of course, a school email account is a totally different story. When I'm taking classes, I check it every day, if not more. But I'll probably forward those to my phone, too, when I go back.
Yeah I should have said that I don't have a 'real job', so I'm not a COMPLETE arse, as I would obviously check it more often if I expected my boss would be emailing me...

Being an incomplete arse still kinda blows though.
I have many emails. I check the work and school accounts at least 4 times a day.My school and work accounts have always been seperate from my personal accounts, of which I have several.
When I first started at NYU I had all my mail sent to my school account and ended up missing some important emails from professors, because I always had so much of it things got deleted by mistake, so I ended up making my school accounts only for school and in grad school I do the same, my work account is also only work. That way there is no getting things "lost" or deleted.
I have a few other accounts but they all forward to one account.
I check them a couple times a day, and before I go to sleep.
