The Bloggers With The Most To Say

Just helped a 20-something Blogger make the important switch over to self-hosted....

Hello all,

I just wanted to write a quick post to tell anyone who may be thinking about getting self-hosted that I just helped a great up-and-coming blogger from 20-Somethings, Brian Camen, set up and transfer his content from Wordpress.com to his own self-hosted blog, and he is very satisfied if I do say so myself. I won't say his new domain name on here yet because I will leave that to him, but once he gets it all set up you should go check it out.

I also have a few other interested people from this network who are most likely going to make the switch very soon as well.

While I know that many on here may not like me promoting my free blog setup service on here, I would not being doing it unless I was providing real value to our bloggers. Self-hosting is an essential part of getting serious about blogging. It's not for everyone, but if you want to get bigger and better, you must self-host. Just ask Brian about the 20 plugins I installed for him, or the Feedburner RSS and e-mail feeds he now has, or the advanced Google Analytics account he got.

I hope I haven't bothered anyone with this little self-promotion here, but like I said, I am truly helping the bloggers on here, and besides, my blog setup service is completely free to you (you only pay for the hosting, which you have to get anyway). Please get in touch with me if you have been considering getting self-hosted and have any questions, or if you just want to get in touch and say hello. Thanks!

That's very cool of you Conrad. I recently made the switch to self-hosting and I like it much better. I didn't really need any help though =P
Thanks for the compliment. Yeah, it isn't that hard once you've done it a few times, but for me the first time was a b**ch. Plus I put in a lot of extras and stuff too and save people several hours of time so it's a really good service. Cool blog by the way!
Conrad - thanks again for your help....honestly, I couldn't of done it myself. I don't have the skills or time. Now that you've done the set up work, I'm going to go in a do the design work. I can't wait to share my new web site with the rest of 20SB - and honestly if you considering the switch, talk to Conrad. He can help you out.
Thanks for the comment Brian, and good luck with your blog! I think you'll do great!
So Conrad, can we talk? I've been thinking about switching to self-hosting for awhile but don't know a thing about it and have a ton of questions.

my email is whoinventedroses at gmail

Thanks!
I'm using DreamHost to host. They have a one-click install for WordPress. Very quick and easy--you should be up and running within minutes. And if you use the advanced install you can upload your own plugins/themes and really make the blog your own.
I'm also using DreamHost. The one-click install is great for me.
Hey Alex,

First off, you should definitely use Wordpress, its the only way to go. You'll see once you use it, its really easy to use and powerful.

As far as hosting, if you are a little guy like we all are, just about all the hosting companies are the same, same features, same price pretty much. You can find good and bad reviews for all of them.

I promote Dreamhost, been with them for over a year and have never had a problem at all, plus they have great customer service. If you go over to my blog at www.conradhees.com/hosting-deal/ you will see that I offer either a free blog setup like I did for Brian, or a $30 off coupon without the free setup. Either one is a great deal.

Keep up the great work on your blog!
I'm interested in moving to self-hosted from wordpress.com. Other than Dreamhostm what are other hosting companies? What do you do for themes? Design? And how hard would it be for a non-techie (like me) to make the move.

And if I decide not to stick with wordpress, and move to another blogging software (typepad, for instance) what should I do?

Would love some help!
Monica, I would talk to Conrad. I am 100% like you, a total non-techie and he helped me out with everything.

For hosting - DreamHost, so far it's going good with them and I don't know of other companies.

For Themes - I just searched and searched through tons of them until I found the one that was right for me.

I was in your position just last month and then I made the switch, so let me know if you have any more questions - I can try to help.
The WordPress install DreamHost has comes with a good number of themes. If none of them suit your needs, go blog surfing and look for a blog that has a style you kind of like. Somewhere on the blog is usually a link back to the theme author's site. If you go there, you can get that theme, or even find another theme the author made which is more suitable.

When I was looking for a theme, I came upon the Björk Volta Tour blog. I kind of liked the theme, so I went to the author's site. When I went there I found the Royale theme. I'm now using that theme and after a few aesthetic tweaks I'm quite happy with it.
I use "siteground" and find it easy. Used them for some time I think they transfer your blog for free.
I knew nothing about it when I went to self hosted but it really is easy to learn the basics even if you don't have time to spend on it.

I also know people who swear by Lunar Pages.
