The Bloggers With The Most To Say

I'm about to be a senior in college, and I've worked at Target for the past three years to get myself through college. I have enough money saved up now that I can go the next year without working there. I HATE working at Target for a number of reasons, but mostly, it's because I don't believe in what I'm doing there. I don't think people should buy cheaply made mass-manufactured junk they don't need, and my heart isn't in it to sell it to them. And my job there keeps me from putting all of my effort towards what I do love--journalism. But I don't get paid for journalism right now. At the moment, I'm finishing up my last year of school and working on projects that will, hopefully, eventually get me a job I love. So quitting Target would allow me to put more effort toward that, but I wouldn't get paid for it, and I'd be living off my savings for the next year.

I already know what I'm going to do, but I'm interested in what you guys have to say. Do you work a crappy job? Why? Do you keep it to have some security in your income, or would you walk away in order to pursue your dream, even if it's risky?

If you've done this, what has your experience been? Did you realize your dream? Are you working on it? What have your struggles/victories been? Did you lose everything and end up worse off?

DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY! staying at a job that you  hate or don't believe in will just stress you out outside of work. i would quit, since you say that's possible, and just apply, apply, apply!

love, little.

Target gave you a lot of experience, it's all about how you present it. Did you help with displays of new merchandise? Where you complimented by customers? Did you regularly hit goals?  Cash handling? Working within a team? Did you get promoted or raises over the years? Put Target on your resume; you learned a great deal.

Go ahead and quit Target. Live off your savings and through your passion into gaining experience. Look for internships that pay or offer a stipend at the end. A lot of them do, use tools like Internships.com and Monster.com.

Good luck.

I'm just in the process of this, and I say quit. What is money when what really matters is personal satisfaction and mental stability? As you said, it's taking away from your time to pursue your dreams; with that time you could volunteer or blog or do an unpaid internship. Well done on saving up enough to have the possibility to choose!
I see you already quit your job (bravo!)
I'm all about making yourself happy, regardless of consequences. Probably why I'm broke and living in a basement. But I'm happy!

My "dream" was to be a teacher. I hated it. I quit and now I'm working a series of crappy jobs to fund my new dream. Hooray life.

hmmm this is hard...i am currently chasing my dream job (still in school) but i work a job that i kinda like (some days are better than others) so i started to look for another job until i can quit the job that i dont like...things like this are hard because you have to make a living for yourself but you dont want to sell your soul to the devil trying to make it to where you want to be.  hopefully things work out for you!!

Pursuing your dream is always, always worth it.  Even if you crash and burn (which will be impossible for you, since you've saved up so much money), you will never regret trying.

I went to school for four years, changed my major seven times, decided to take a break, worked at Whole Foods (I call it the food whole) for a year, hated it, and had no desire or drive or passion for anything.  So, I packed a suitcase and bought a one-way ticket to NYC.  I'm only 3 months in, and totally broke, but making it work.  And I'm loving it.

If i were you and had the money saved up where i didnt have to work for a year, i would go for it. You never know, if you start now you could be making money as a journalist within the year and wouldn't have to spend a the entire year unemployed.
