The Bloggers With The Most To Say

I just found 20SB three days ago and I love it! I just started my blog 4 months ago and I haven't been able to find other bloggers that are my age, I can't wait to meet some other 20 something bloggers!

Finding the community came at the perfect time. I work installing solar and geothermal and my blog is about the clean tech industry in Boston (The Green Light Distrikt). In June we're launching a national competition to find Miss Pinup and 11 other girls who will be featured in our renewable energy pinup calendar that will make renewable energy sexy, literally. The goal is increase awareness and action on the issue. 30% of profits will be going to 350.org

I'm looking for advice on the best way to spread the world about the Miss Pinup Power competition? What would you guys suggest we do? We have a couple ideas that we'll test but I'm very interested to hear any and all ideas.

Thanks!

Chris

i say you blog, tweet, facebook, and spread the word to everyone and anyone, and look for women that aren't your typical sexy - blonde/brunette with big fake boobs and look for conventional sexy. Do like a woman reading with candle light and make it sexy. Or a woman washing clothes by hand, in like a very tasteful bikini. sorry I love this idea, and I soon as I read this, ideas kept sprouting into mind.. Wish I could help and be part of this, but I'm in Toronto :(
Tanya,

Thanks for the advice! We're definitely going to be spreading it via my blog, our twitter accounts and facebook profiles.

Also, the competition has some built in virality, as when girls submit their pictures they'll be encouraged to post it to their profiles and twitter. Also, they'll naturally want to do this when the voting starts!

I agree about the typical sexy, we've been thinking about profiling women in the industry. We'll see how it goes, since all the photos will be submitted and voted by the community, not us.

Being in Toronto is not a limitation! You guys have some great renewable energy incentives that have just passed. Do you think people in Canada will be interested in this project?

Chris
get it out to local colleges and universities. i hear there are a few of those in the boston area. also, love your idea. we tried a similar thing when i was in college. and for 350 last year (i was in aspen) we got everyone up on the mountain in the middle of summer to take a picture with their ski gear. surprisingly aspen skiing company is making a big effort to go green. good luck!

and if you need anyone to sit at the beach in july drinking a cool beverage with a tiny umbrella in it to promote turning off those air conditioners, i'd love to do it. i think your idea is a hoot! i love it
Kate,

Great idea! I agree, college students will love this. I know a couple people who are still in college and in green organizations. I've also been in touch with the organizer of the 350.org chapter in Boston.

We'd love a photo of you on the beach in July! I'll let you know when we launch and we can get that photo!

Chris
haha this is too funny :) I really like this idea. I work for a power company and we put out calendars too- only ours have different landscape photos from various places around town. Clearly, you guys are doing it way better.

Hmm, the best way to spread the competition?? I guess over the internet- which has been said. But it just makes sense.
What power company do you work for?

I agree, we're definitely going to spread it over the internet. We've been thinking about reaching out to bloggers who are interested in 1) renewable energy 2) politics 3) entrepreneurship 4) fashion/art 5) media.

What do you think?
I work for PUD 3, have been working there for about 4 years now. http://www.masonpud3.org/ :) I am a student though- I go to WSU, so I only work on my breaks from school.

But I really love this idea- I think it's great and really needs to be spread as something that's really do-able. Often times I think people are too lazy- or think it will happen in the future if they just sit and wait. But this is a great way to spread the message!

I love the idea of reaching out to all types of bloggers! Get everyone involved! And I totally want to help- in any way you need it!
Let me know when you start looking for entries :)
Wow. Being able to continue breathing the air and sustaining the planet just isn't sexy enough, huh?

As someone who is totally supportive of green technology and renewable energy, I'm really disappointed that a company providing these things feels the need to get attention for themselves at the expense of women (or girls, as you call them).
Actually yeah, I've rethought and I agree with you on that.

I don't see why objectification and disrespect needs to be brought into it.
But if the girls/women are volunteering- how is it at their expense? Maybe it would be more "fair" if there was a mr. power pin up too?
Sorry, I meant at the expense of women overall in the way that the (extremely tired) idea of a contest pitting women against one another to crown one the "sexiest" and then put them all in a calendar to be ogled by strangers does none of us any favours in gaining respect for anything beyond our physical appearances.

And sure, having a Mr. Power Pin-up might make it more "fair" but I don't believe the solution to the objectification of women is to objectify men as well.
