The Bloggers With The Most To Say

I just found 20SB three days ago and I love it! I just started my blog 4 months ago and I haven't been able to find other bloggers that are my age, I can't wait to meet some other 20 something bloggers!

Finding the community came at the perfect time. I work installing solar and geothermal and my blog is about the clean tech industry in Boston (The Green Light Distrikt). In June we're launching a national competition to find Miss Pinup and 11 other girls who will be featured in our renewable energy pinup calendar that will make renewable energy sexy, literally. The goal is increase awareness and action on the issue. 30% of profits will be going to 350.org

I'm looking for advice on the best way to spread the world about the Miss Pinup Power competition? What would you guys suggest we do? We have a couple ideas that we'll test but I'm very interested to hear any and all ideas.

Thanks!

Chris

Sarah,

Not a problem, everyone is always critical of ideas and it's easy to take feedback. I know that the idea is polarizing, this is somewhat of the point and why we picked it.

To your first point. I agree, by the dictionary definition it is. But, since we don't live in a word of black and white, objectification is more about intent and taste. Funny you mention this, it got my thinking how much men are objectified in society today. Professionals sports is the perfect example of this. Someone who disagrees with you would say, whats the problem? they're just bathing suits? And I know personally I seen worse every weekend then will be allowed on the calendar. Not that it justifies it, but it's interesting how groups (in this case women) will internalize values.

To your second point. One of the parts of the calendar will be to have people answer questions about their own actions, and maybe their favorite organization fighting climate change. This will thus give bonus points based on someones actions and organizations they support.

To your third point, what I learned from our response to the earthquake in Hiati is that it's more effective to utilize humans nature instincts to change behavior then to try and change instincts to change behavior. see the description here: http://thegreenlightdistrikt.com/2010/01/26/how-helping-haiti-now-s...

To your last point, did you see Bruno? A lot of what he's pointing out in his film reminds me of your point.

On a serious note, I think the real issue and what makes you angry, is how far our society has pushed sex.

I'm curious, when you hear pinup calendar in my description what are you picturing? playboy? maxim? or something more like 17 magazine? would you call 17 magazine, that has women models displaying clothing objectification?

Now that I'm looking at other people's response it almost seems like the problem some people have (most people I've talked with love the idea) is that we're being blunt and honest about what we're doing, while most other companies are not.
One more question to Rob and Sarah,

Would you perspectives changed if we said beautiful, fun, cool, gorgeous girls instead of sexy?

Chris
