The Bloggers With The Most To Say

For those of you who moderate comments, is there a particular reason why? Or if you don't allow anonymous comments, is there a particular reason why? Lastly, would you ever/have you ever deleted comments (that weren't spam) on your blog?

Little back story: I don't moderate comments on my site and I do allow anonymous comments. I had an experience last week where someone commented saying something nasty about me. I chose to leave it up (and awesomely enough, the commenter actually emailed me a few days later to apologize). One of my other blogger friends was very confused as to why I left it up, my thinking was if I'm going to put myself out there, then I have to be able to take any criticism I might get. We then got on the topic of moderating comments and she had some very sensible and valid reasons for moderating her comments.

That was long. Apologies. In closing, I'm curious. To moderate or not to moderate?

I moderate comments so that I really read them all... I am absentminded enough to forget to read comments, so if I have to moderate them, I get to read them! So not the best of reasons... And I like to moderate them because it means I feel comfortable allowing anonymous commenters. If I feel it's innapropriate (read: My grandmother reads my blog. If I wouldn't want for her to see it, I don't let it get past me.) I like to be able to stop it from being on a website I am responsible for. And I was raised in such a fashion that there's no reason to be nasty or tolerate nasty. So I don't.
I don't allow anonymous commenting - I figure that would slightly decrease the potential for nutsos. I have moderation turned on but I haven't had to use it. Some of my posts deal with sexual assault and I don't need rape apologist assholes retraumatizing myself or people who read my blog. Additionally, sometimes comments get spammed, which sucks for your readers. Other than extremely abusive comments or spam, I don't plan on moderating all that much.
I have the comment moderation on because some people starting leaving weird comments so I wanted to read them before they went up on my blog.
When I was at blogger I had the moderate feature on at first, because I was new and didn't know what to expect. But eventually I took it off. Now that I'm at WP it just moderates the first time someone has commented and from there it is free game. I don't think I will ever put a moderator on again. I used to not like having anonymous people comment, but once I got rid of the moderator I said 'what the heck'.

The only time I have ever deleted a comment was when a reader asked me to delete it or when I noticed it was a duplicate comment because they thought it didn't go through or whatever. However, if the comment is offensive to me or another reader I will most likely delete it.
I used to moderate before, but I took that option off a couple weeks ago. It was just getting annoying. I don't accept anonymous comments though.

I like to read all my comments, so instead of having to moderate them, I have it set up that when I get a comment, I get an e-mail. That way, I can read the comments without having to sign in or accept them each time.
I moderate for first time commenters- for me it has a dual purpose: first, it ensures I get a red flag when someone new finds my blog, and as I like to e-mail new readers personally I find this really helpful for community building. Second? It catches any spam that my spam filter doesn't! =)

I've had negative comments in moderation here and there and I usually leave them up, the only time I've deleted comments was when I re-imported my old blog content into my new blog. I had some issues with a fairly aggressive stalker and I removed all his comments in case he would be notified by his analytics or wordpress that there were incoming links coming from my new site.
I have always moderated comments because, let's face it, this is the internet. You never know who is reading what you post and what they will say if you give them a little tiny box to put text in. Moderation has helped me get rid of spam comments, racist remarks, and comments that were entirely in chinese or spanish that I couldn't read. If I can't read/understand it, I don't want it attached to my blog.
I haven't gotten enough comments for it to even matter, but I do moderate. So far, I have allowed every comment that has come in, but I just want to be cautious, because you never know who's out there roaming around the interweb. This way is just easier, because nothing goes on without me OKing it first.
not, isn't the whole point of blogging to be as really real as possible? i am new so i could be wrong! i wouldnt delete a comment unless it was way obscene and unnecessary and not relevant to anything.
I don't moderate comments but I don't allow anonymous ones. This is partly because if anyone talks crap about me, I want them to have the courage to put their name out there, and partly because I had an incident with blogging a while back where some people in real life found it and abused me for a while about it, even via 20sb! So, okay, perhaps its a bit cowardly of me, but I just prefer not to risk it.
I have the moderator on, but for an different / odd reason. I had a spam filter on my blog but it was throwing out non-spam comments and in the end it somehow cut off commenting alltogether. So I removed the spam filter and in came comment moderation - basically so I can clear out the (30+/day) spam before it gets published.

I've never deleted a genuine comment but I've not yet received anon / nasty comment...so I don't really know what I would do if that happens!
I don't moderate my comments. I'm also new to the blog world, so I have never gotten a bad/rude comment. I do have some anonymous comments, and I do not mind them at all. As for rude comments, I don't think I would erase them unless they say something obscene or something like that.

Just like you said, if we put ourselves out there, we have to be able to take criticism. So, I would only erase spam.
