The Bloggers With The Most To Say

I am not a newbie when it comes to the whole moving thing.  I have moved several times, but they have been apartment to apartment.  The Hubby and I have just bought our first home, but have been renting a house for 5 years.  We have accumulated a lot of stuff.

I am having a disagreement with him about the whole packing process.  He feels that we should pack everything, and then pitch what we don't want after we move.

I on the other hand, do not want to pack everything up (especially things that we will not be using in the new house), and move it over there - only to turn around and throw it in a dumpster.  I have been secretly throwing some stuff away while he has been busying doing other things, but he has been noticing (hence the little fight.)

I need your help.  What do you do when you move?  Do you throw stuff away while you pack or unpack?   What do you do in preparation for a big move?

I have less then 10 days until I move and have tons to pack.  I could use any advice.

I personally have no choice about how I move--I have to syphon out the clothes and goods I can't take with me (To England), because shipping and flying everything there will get waaaay too expensive. I think it's better to do it your way anyway.

Try to get your husband to understand that just unloading a certain amount of stuff now will make it less stressful for yourselves while you are trying to get acclaimated to a new home.
Oh wow!!! Good luck with your move. I wouldn't know what I want to keep and what I would be able to let go of.
Pitch before. It's such a waste of time (and sometimes money) to move all the stuff you don't want or need. Plus, it's kind of satisfying to do a major purge before moving. It's probably the best part. And really, chances are, if you don't do it now, it'll be staying when you get to your new place.

I make lists. It's the only thing that can keep be organized.

I do one room at a time.

Towels make great padding.

Pack the boxes tight. Less open space = less damage.

I number the boxes and then create an inventory of what is in that box. That way, if I need something right away but don't want to unpack everything at that moment, I can find it quickly.

If you can spring for it, pay someone to load and unload the truck. It's totally worth the money.
