20 Something Bloggers

The Bloggers With The Most To Say

A big part of social networking sites is, of course, networking. I thought since we're all in that awkward 20-something stage where we're starting careers/changing careers we should use this forum to our advantage. We all have some connections in the field, whether big or small, so why not help one another out? For example, if someone wants to get into teaching, I know quite a few experienced teachers who would love to offer advice and opinions.

Anyway, I'm starting this forum topic for us to do just that. Feel free to comment if you're starting off in a field and want people to talk to about the career. We could help one another out and, hopefully, land one another a job. Likewise, if you have contacts, or would like to be a contact, reply to that person and help them out. The first step to successfully networking is contacting everyone you know; with 20 Something Bloggers, we know quite a few people. In these hard to find a job times, I think we need all the help we could get.

Thanks for the advice! The local newspaper here is not hiring anymore staff (they just had cutbacks) but the editor is willing to talk about an unpaid internship and possible freelance work for their marketing department like business profiles. Hopefully I can work into those things! :)
Hopefully it works out. In marketing, you might not get very much writing experience though, just so you are aware.
Don't forget about smaller "metro papers." A lot of young-reader publications have openings for smaller jobs like movie/TV show/bar/gaming reviewers fairly often. These jobs aren't the greatest and don't always pay a lot, but (at least from my experience) do open the door to more "meaty" opportunities.
awesome topic!

I'm currently trying to get into social media marketing and/or freelancing. If anyone has any advice please share!

lauren - I would totally pass on any words of advice from friends in the legal field, unfortunately the ones i know seem to be a similar position as your boyfriend unfortunately.
which area are you located? I know someone who recently started a social media marketing company that I could you put you in touch with, but it's in the LA area.
I live in Washington, DC. My fiance and I are looking to relocate to western CT sometime in the next year though.

Where is it located?
I *technically* work in social media marketing, though I'm just getting started. It's fun, but without a marketing background I find it a challenge to think like a marketer. I love social media, the community, the tools, but figuring out how to "leverage them to drive traffic" etc, is not only something I don't know much about, it also just seems downright unappealing. I just hate feeling like a sleazy salesman. Social media seems pretty good about that though, it's more about listening, being useful, and building relationships with people.
This is an AWESOME idea. I work in the public relations field and I'm looking to break into marketing/advertising/a larger public relations firm in the LA/preferably Orange County area.
Currently, I work in the energy industry but I've worked in the legal field and administrative field as well as being an advisor at the university level. I have a lot of contacts and experience in the legal field, and when it comes to interviewing...as well as what your resume should look like, what you should include, how to search for jobs, etc.

I'm looking to break into the freelance writing field so I'll take all tips I can get with that!

I also KNOW a lot of people in different fields so if I can't answer a question, I can always direct you in the right direction.
PrincessQ I will definitely be in contact with you. I am about to have a career change and your advise on how to restructure my resume would help a great deal.
Sure thing. Just shoot me an email and I'll help as much as I can!
I am an Accountant, and I know quite allot of people with good positions, but as you all can see, my sector has gotten the hardest hit, job cut wise. But I hope things get better and my contact will be of more use and I will be more than happy to help any one.
