20 Something Bloggers

The Bloggers With The Most To Say

A big part of social networking sites is, of course, networking. I thought since we're all in that awkward 20-something stage where we're starting careers/changing careers we should use this forum to our advantage. We all have some connections in the field, whether big or small, so why not help one another out? For example, if someone wants to get into teaching, I know quite a few experienced teachers who would love to offer advice and opinions.

Anyway, I'm starting this forum topic for us to do just that. Feel free to comment if you're starting off in a field and want people to talk to about the career. We could help one another out and, hopefully, land one another a job. Likewise, if you have contacts, or would like to be a contact, reply to that person and help them out. The first step to successfully networking is contacting everyone you know; with 20 Something Bloggers, we know quite a few people. In these hard to find a job times, I think we need all the help we could get.

Okay, I'll start with the first inquiry:

This May my boyfriend graduates from law school. I'm incredibly excited for him and proud of him. After he takes the Bar in July, he's a full fledged lawyer. Crazy, right? The only thing getting in the way of our excitement is the fact that he has yet to find a job, even after sending out his resume to an incredible amount of firms. It's not that he's not qualified, on the contrary, he's quite smart, dedicated and has an excellent resume, it's just that not a lot of places are hiring. That, and he doesn't have many contacts. So what I'm asking you is this: does anyone have any connections with people who are in the legal field? People who wouldn't mind just talking with him and offering advice, or even letting him know if there's an opening? If not, that's okay. I'm just trying to do as much as I can as the helpful girlfriend. But, seriously, any help at all would be really appreciated. Thank you so much in advance!
Oh, I'll post here too then! how funny :)

I would like to speak with people about freelance writing and how to form a proper career out of it, even just a part time career. Any help with that would be amazing.

I can offer advice in the games industry as well as events, mostly corporate parties and team-building things. Maybe that'll help someone out there! I've also done a lot of management work in restaurants...

Good topic!
I freelance! I don't do it as a career, I can't live by it, but it's definitely a fun way to earn extra money. I'll message you in a bit with info.
Ah, freelance writing! That is also something I am working towards. Right now I'm trying to connect with the editor of a local newspaper. I just moved to a super small town in Oregon, so I'm hoping it's easier to break into here (as opposed to So Cal, where I moved from). I'm finishing my BA in Communication - will be done in July. So the push is on to do something!
d.muffin, I may be able to offer an information trade with you.

I'm a recent MBA grad looking to find a way to get his foot in the door in the gaming industry who happened to fall into a PT-gig doing freelance writing/photography. It's a great side-gig as it's definitely been paying the bills for the last 3 months, but it's not quite what I want to do.

Any information/questions you have I may be able to help you out with. On the same token, any advice/suggestions on the gaming industry would be great.
Sounds like a deal! I'm out all night tonight but if you message me, I promise to get back to you! Terrible memory I have :)
I looked for a job for about 4 months before getting my first interview. I'm in aerospace engineering (rocket science if you wanna be sexy) so my field is one that doesn't get hit nearly as hard when the economy craps out as it has recently. All that to say that sometimes it just takes a while to get things going. About the time I got my first interview I had almost given up on getting a job in this industry. I was starting to consider other options, really. Then I got an interview (and an offer, which I took) and now I'm working sweet sweet rocket scientry and enjoying it to boot.
What a great idea. I'm low-man on the totem poll at the newspaper I work at, so not sure I could be of much help however - especially because our company has a hiring freeze right now. But if anyone ever hears of amazing journalism opportunities, let me know.
I also used to work at a newspaper and they had a hiring freeze almost the entire time i was there. it's really tough out there but i find that they let go of the older more experienced workers in favor of the new (read: cheaper) writers. so there is some hope...
Immediate hope, but not too much hope for truly making this my lifelong career, which is what I'd prefer... ::Shrug::
How did you guys make your way into the newspaper? That is what I'm trying to do right now. Not because I'm excited about writing for a newspaper but because it is a legit place to begin a writing career. What advice can you give in reference to getting into the newspaper?
I went to school for journalism and got not only a degree in that, but one in English as well. I had some newspaper experience already from internships, so I think my education and experience got me in the door.

Most newspapers want to see proof that you can write. JournalismJobs.com lists newspaper jobs that are available across the country - albeit not all that are available, but a good number of them ... however, news jobs are pretty lacking at the moment - and list how much experience the specific paper would like to see.

If it's possible, find an unpaid internship where you can get some news writing samples together. You don't have to do it for long, but it'll make you aware of AP Style and the details of writing leads and such. You could also try freelancing and asking local papers if they have a great topic or event they can't cover with their staff that you can do for maybe $40 per story (my first writing gig after college was a freelance article).
