The Bloggers With The Most To Say

When a new person comes you read your blog would you rather have them go back and read everything you've ever written and see how you've changed over time, or would you want them to just start fresh?

Good lord, I would never ask anyone to read ALL my old posts. My Archive has over 850 posts that span over 4 years of blogging! So unless someone has hours and hours of time to kill on their hands, asking someone to read your ENTIRE blog isn't realistic.

This is sort of why I have a list of "Featured Posts" linked on my sidebar. They are a handful of posts I think are the more interesting ones from my Archive. So readers can read those to get a feel for my blog. Or they can just read my current months posts or scan thru my Archive if they like. However they want to do it, it's fine with me.
haha I should have read this before I posted my responce. THIS is exactly what I was thinking. : )
I definitely wouldn't think most people would read all posts. I think reading the posts that are on the front page (say, the last 5 or so) would be good. maybe even the last month. I link to old posts when I mention them in current posts, and my biography has lot of the important things you need to know about me. My blog is so "as it happens" that reading something that's even 3 or 4 months old wouldn't necessarily be relevant. Of course, if someone *really* wants to get to know me or wants to read about a particular experience, then using the archives is good because I may not revisit that topic for awhile.
For a blog like mine, I guess the reader is the best person to choose and decide if he/she wishes to read my earlier posts. I use my blog primarily to recommend books, movies, music albums, songs, websites etc to my readers. So let's say if you as a reader would like to read more recommendations, the easiest way you could choose is to check the most relevant labels and see all posts catering to the area you'd want to focus on. So it's entirely the readers choice and need with regards to a blog like mine.
Perhaps perusing the blog for a few older ones is a good idea, but reading all of them? Too time consuming and clearly I've grown since starting my blog and wouldn't wish anyone the pain of reading the first one I wrote, ha.
I've been doing this just over a year now, and would actually prefer if a new reader went back and read some, if not all of my older entries. However, as of lately, I've been grouping related posts as a series by using a single title with a varying subtitle and linking & track backing to the posts I reference.

That's a great idea! When bloggers do this, I usually go back and read the other posts if I like the first one.
Yea, an exceptionally great blog will usually interest me enough to read through the old entries.
People read through my archives fairly often and I'm always hugely flattered by it. I think it helps new readers understand where I am-- physically, emotionally, and otherwise-- but it isn't necessary. I try to link back to relevant posts whenever I bring up ongoing issues or relationships so that readers can catch themselves up if they're so inclined.

I rarely read through archives myself, unless the blog is very narrative-driven. Mine is, which I think is why readers often read through the backstory.
Well, my site is pretty new...and I get a lot of hits from search engines through image searches for some reason. For my new readers...I don't expect anyone to go back and read my older blogs but I'd be flattered if they did. It does give a better insight as to who I am and where I'm coming from but I also encourage people to come to me with questions, etc so my door is always open if any of my readers are curious about something I may have referenced in a post.
Oh God, NO. They would be reading a thousand entries. : x Five years worth of information isn't good for anyone, especially when my first entries were things I would cringe to read on someone elses blog today. lol I mean if someone wanted to (and had tons of time) I wouldn't be anti them doing it I just don't think they would get much joy from all the crazy colors I used back then. : )

I personally read and skip around a lot when I find a new blog I like. I check out any entries they have linked to that they thought were special. THAT usually gives me an idea of what I'm in for. : )
I will never ask anyone to read from the start lol But if they want to, it will be cool. They can just scroll the archive, I suppose.
