Old and busted: TV commercials for condoms. New hotness: TV commercials for abortions

So as reported by the Daily Mail, there are some new adverts for abortions that are going to be airing on prime time tv.

"'Are you late?' a young girl is asked in the advert, as she stares morosely out of a coffee shop window. A student and a young mother-of-two are also featured in the month-long campaign, which is being run by the Marie Stopes International charity. It carries out 65,000 terminations a year in British clinics, mostly on behalf of the NHS. "

So what do you all think? Whether or not you are a lifer or choicer, how do you feel about it being advertised on tv?

It's all just loaded language from both sides. You're both just trying to make each other look bad.
It's a ridiculous PR battle that has little to do with the bottom line - which is whether you trust a woman to be able to make decisions for her body or not --- I do.

Keep your laws off my body :-)
Sorry, I don't believe murder should be legal except in extreme circumstances.
And I don't see it as murder --- I don't see a fetus as a baby or a person - just the possibility of one, and it's up to each woman to decide for herself whether to choose that possibility or choose to not have it.
Well, I see it as murder. You can have a baby at 24 weeks, and you can abort one at 24 weeks (over here).

I'm sure you'd see a fetus as a baby if you had one growing inside you that you were attached to.
Me too. The opposite of pro-choice is anti-choice, not pro-life.
It's all loaded language. It doesn't mean anything about the issues.
I agree. We need to focus less on the wording and more on how each side feels and why it is that they feel that way. I just feel that if people spent less time bashing the other side and listening to what they have to say, they could maybe understand where each person is coming from.

I'm not sure that I believe abortion should be illegal. But I, personally, am not a fan of abortion. Because, to me, it would feel like murder. Because as Shinxy said earlier, her baby had a personality while it was inside of her, and I don't understand how anybody could say that that baby wasn't very much alive. Then again, I have never been in that situation. I honestly cannot say how I would feel if I ever landed in a situation where I really had to consider my options which is why I'm not completely sure abortion should be made illegal.

After saying that, I can see the other side. I understand why many of you are pro-choice. Just because I don't completely agree with abortion being legal doesn't mean I can't understand where you're coming from.

In most situations, you won't be able to change someone's view on such an important topic as this one. But it's good for us to share our opinions and why we feel that way so maybe we can understand one another. And personally, I'm much more inclined to listen to someone's opinion if they don't spend the whole time bashing the opposing party.
I don't think trying to clear up inaccurate terminology is the same as bashing the other party.

I actually think letting people know that pro choice does not mean pro abortion is a very important distinction to make when discussing these issues, especially if, as you say, you really want to understand everyone's viewpoint.
I would think that most people who are against abortion don't believe that those who are for it are anti-life. (And I use the term "for it" very lightly.) But the parties have to come up with something to call it, and for some reason those are the two terms they came up with.

And I do understand the viewpoint of pro-choicers. Because if I was 18, unemployed, and in a bad situation when I found out I was pregnant, who knows if I wouldn't have done the same thing?

Maybe rather than debating whether or not abortion should be illegal, the government should focus more on educating kids on unprotected sex. I know that at many, many schools (especially here in the South), they preach abstinence only which is just causing more problems. If kids were a little more educated about the matter, and if parents would be more open with their children, kids might not be as scared to ask their parents about getting condoms or birth control.

My mom would never talk about sex with me, and I was terrified to ask her for birth control. When she found out I was sexually active, she freaked out and grounded me. For God's sake, I thought pulling out was a good form of birth control because my boyfriend told me it was, and I couldn't ask my mom if it was true or not.

I would think parents would rather shell out a little money for birth control rather than having to pay for an abortion because their teenage kids were too afraid to approach them.

Now for those people who are using protection to the best of their ability and get pregnant? I don't blame them one bit. They were responsible about it, but something still went wrong.

I guess that the reason I am not a fan of abortion being legal is because it feels like a fallback option for people who just don't feel like using contraception. There are just too many high school girls that tell themselves if they get pregnant, they can just abort it anyways. At least, there were at my high school.

Anyways, this was long-winded. And I really don't want to offend anyone with my opinions. But I've noticed that way too many conservatives state why they believe what they believe and never give any explanation so I thought I would try to explain myself in a polite way. Trust me, I live in Louisiana. I'm surrounded by crazy nutjob conservatives. Just know that not all of us "pro-lifers" are Bible-thumping morons.
It's funny, your attitude towards the whole issue actually lines up with that of a lot of pro-choice people I know.

I know a lot of pro-choice women who say they would not be comfortable having an abortion themselves, but they wouldn't take that choice away from other women who for whatever reason, are not prepared to go through with a pregnancy.

I hear the argument about people using abortions in place of birth control, but I just find it so hard to believe that anyone would rather go through such an unpleasant experience and all the red tape that can go along with an abortion than to just use a condom.

Clearly the girls at your high school needed better access to birth control and/or sex ed. I agree with you 100% that education should be the first step. Preventing unwanted pregnancies in the first place is definitely the ideal. But when those prevention methods fail, we absolutely need access to safe, legal abortions.

And, even if they don't need an abortion specifically, hopefully these ads will also reach young men and women who are looking for access to the sex ed they might not be getting at home or in school.
I'm a big fan of abortion, as I pretty much hate babies. And yeah, I think advertising them on tv is pretty cool too. So long as the places are legit. I worry about those cheapsy clinic places; they look skeezy.
