Old and Busted:Monitoring what your kids eat. New Hotness:FDA to put "choking hazard" label on foods

Foods such as grapes and popcorn. This would be a government mandate. The article I read about this on the nytimes.com website starts off with a man describing the death of his 23mo due to her choking on popcorn. That IMO is sad and scary. What is also sad and scary is that he and his wife proceeded to sue the popcorn company for wrongful death. He says that he didn't know that popcorn was dangerous and he should have been warned...

So now the FDA is back into arguements as to whether or not they should mandate food labeling. Apparently some hotdog companies have volunatrily done so.

My question is where does neglect end and personal responsibility begin? Was the company neglectful for not warning that popcorn is not a food that babies should eat unsupervised? Is it common knowledge that certain foods should not be given to young children such as grapes or hotdogs? Or, should this guy have been watching his kid eat (they found 3 pieces logged in various places along her wind pipe, and lungs) or maybe should he have known that you shouldn't feed a child that young popcorn?

This is ridiculous - I"m sorry, but isn't part of basic parenting that you teach your child to chew before swallowing? Do parents really need to be reminded of that??

Because if you have to be reminded that you should teach your kid to chew food, I'm guessing that you have way bigger parenting issues than hot dogs!
Seriously if someone doesn't know that a toddler can choke on hot dogs or grapes they shouldn't have had children. It's like letting them run around on he 5th floor with an open window and no supervision.
My next question - more or less ridiculous than the hot coffee warnings now required?
