The Bloggers With The Most To Say

Okay, this topic comes up a lot, but as some of you may have noticed, we had a partner this month for some events on the network and they're (sort of) in the space. Talking with them made me realize I'm not entirely sure how the scene has changed in response to new media/social media.

They want to help people communicate safely online...how do people manage their online goings-on? I know I use services to keep things safe...does everyone?

I had a match account...I paid for it for a while I think. I went on like two dates, both alright, nothing special.

I have an OKCupid profile, which in my mind is heads and shoulders above anything I've seen elsewhere. It's free, it's social, it's not boring and relationships can actually form ON the platform.

What else is out there? What's changing the game? How are people dating online now?

Sidenote: I'm a loser and never go on dates so I really have no experience and I'm totally curious.

I think relationships in general have changed as a result of the infusion of technology into our lives. In my mind those changes are both good and bad. As for dating specifically, I think that it has become so much more normalized. Five or ten years ago I would have thought it was weird that a couple began dating because they met online. Today, I have a match account.
I'm the opposite as you apparently...I'm on okcupid but have yet to meet a decent guy there (but have gone on about 8 reallllyyyy bad first dates) but i've found plenty on match - although at the moment my free trial is up and I have to to figure out a way to get my email address into my profile. I'm still working on it. lol

I think there is still a certain taboo to online dating, but it's becoming less so. As a friend pointed out to me, it's like being set up on a blind date, only instead of a friend/acquaintance setting you up, it's a computer system.

I don't give out my name to someone who I haven't exchanged at least 4 emails with, usually. unless he gives out his name first, in which case I will sometimes. idk.
Let's just say I've seriously impressed myself over the past few weeks because the last few dates I've been on have been with guys I met the "normal" way. IN PERSON. I know. Weird.

I don't use dating sites at all but because of networks like this one (and this isn't the only one but it is definitely a major player) and, ha, YES, twitter, I meet a TON of people online and some of those people turn into guys I date.

It's different, of course, meeting people online, and I haven't decided which i prefer.

As far as keeping myself safe online... it's tough for me. I don't list my phone number or address or anything, obviously, but I'm a musician and I post show dates so I'm easy to find. I generally just go with my gut... it hasn't been wrong yet, so I'm hoping it kind of stays that way.
I think I should note that I've had this love hate relationship with match. I've gone on some really good dates and I've also gone on some terribly horrible dates. I will say that I think I prefer going out with people I meet the "normal" way. It may have just been bad luck on my part, but it seems like the focus or motivation of people is different. With online dating you have this huge pool of people to pick from. You get emails and winks and all of that fancy stuff. I think people are always looking for the next best thing because they are bombarded with options. When you date someone you just meet out or something...in my experience there is more of a willingness to see where things go.

Phyllis, you did make me think I should be protecting myself more online though. I totally tell people my name in the first email. And, I've gone out with people after a couple email exchanges. I figure that it is the same as meeting someone in a bar and having them ask you out. I do make sure to meet a guy out and not tell him where I live. Does that count as protecting myself?
