The Bloggers With The Most To Say

On top of all that I do I'm a natural perfumer (more on my site) and I was wondering...

So what matters most, smell or packaging?

I ask because I do scent of the month where I release one or two limited ed. scents...well this month I'm lazy so Nov's is still up!
Thanks,
Lola

Pretty is my favourite perfume at the moment actually! Funnily enough, I was going to mention that and then I forgot.
My university dissertation was on perfume advertising and packaging - I can't remember what the outcome was though. For me, I guess a perfume is like a guy . . . I am initially drawn to the packaging but if what is inside isn't any good, then I'm immediately turned off. So while the way it looks does catch my attention, it won't hold my interest if it doesn't smell good to me.
I think the scent for me is most important.

It is nice to have a lovely package to put it in, but you shouldn't really be buying something for the bottle if you don't like what it contains.

It could have the most awesome packaging in the world and smell like dirty feet and I wouldn't buy it.

I'd say having a nice looking package is the "bonus" of a fantastic scent
Packaging is nice, but the scent is what matters more. I wouldn't buy a perfume in a nice bottle if I didn't like the way it smelled.
When it comes down to it, the scent is what will sell me on the perfect perfume. However, I think Antonella is right about it being a perfect mixture between the packaging and the scent. If you can't draw the consumer in with a unique bottle or box, especially with all of the well known designers and celebrities that make perfumes and colognes now, it's going to be overlooked. I think Marc Jacobs Daisy is a great fragrance that's packaging perfectly compliments its simplicity.
I think the packaging draws a customer in, and the smell of perfume clinches the purchase. Seemingly, then, both are equally important.
I agree with all the scent votes, a good scent is a MUST for me. It doesn't matter how pretty the packaging is if the scent is horrible, lacking in good high and/or low notes, too strong, etc. And the reverse is true - it doesn't matter how awful or ugly the packaging is if it smells divine, because whenit comes down to it, I'm wearing the scent, not the packaging! No one's going to care what the bottle looked like if I smell awful or amazing. I love a beautiful bottle, but if it smells bad, I'm more likely to wait until I can find an empty bottle of it on eBay and use it for display purposes only. :)
Scent! My perfume is usually in a drawer so no one is going to come over and comment on what a pretty bottle of perfume I have.

HOWEVER.

People have stopped me to tell me how nice I smell. And if they are a man? I usually reward such thoughtfulness with a good make out.
Hmm....*mental note*
scent, for sure.

same goes for mens' cologne. i dont really care that the bottle is of a bust of a man, i care that i want to jump the man that wears it.
i'll agree. scent for sure. who cares what the packaging looks like. i've been given perfumes as presents which look real pretty and smell like a french skunk whore. i'd much rather be complimented for how alluring i smell than what the bottle of a product i buy looks like.

oh, and i love men's cologne. men smell soooo dreamy. well, i take that back. some men are really stinky, but a good smelling men is verrrrrryyyy intresting to me.
